No More Habeus Corpus - Discuss

Well we officially have killed habeus corpus in the US. One of the most important rights we as citizens have. I'm not sure whether to be sad, angry, or confused at this. I'm not a huge Olbermann fan as he's a little too left for me, but I did enjoy his special comment on the death of this:

http://movies.crooksandliars.com/Olb...-RIPHabeus.wmv

We forget that this country has abused the system over the years and that habeus corpus is necessary. Not just for George Bush, but any President (democrat or republican) that we put into power. I don't consider this an issue that should be divided on party lines, I see it as an issue of our government taking the rights of our citizens away.

Discuss.

Kinda stunned that the removal of habeus corpus actually happened with the introduction of.. forget the name, the Military Commissions Act? For a nation which is supposed to be an example of democracy - this is some serious shit.

Dumping all politics (they went out the window years back) - the sooner this current regime is removed from office, the better.

The problem is that this can go beyond Bush. The next President can do this now, followed by the next. Once you stricken it, it's done. Government doesn't like to give rights back to their citizens after taking them.

Sure... hate to say it, but can smell a cancer which has been festering for a few years now and none of it is in any way helpful to the US - or the rest of the world. Agree that once a law has been passed, it takes a volume of effort to have it removed and a balance restored - and that rarely happens in reality.

Almost every week or so now there is still more bullshit ideas flowing which basically curb many things from individual rights to selling some, often crazy idea of "control" (eg .. current claims of some "authority" in space). Ya can't help but wonder why the rush to implement change on these fundamental laws - is it a push to pass as much bullshit as possible before leaving office and having a nice set of new conditions in place for a future president?

Only me, but smell these are dangerous people and would doubt much of the reasoning given years ago for others "limitations" - eg.. the International Criminal Court. This was primarily for major human rights abuses, tho the objection given was that it was for the protection of US forces. Seriously doubt any judge in the ICC would even listen to weak allegations against any serving force, US or otherwise - and suspect this has more to do with covering asses of bodies in Washington. There are many more examples, but overall - don't look too good.

When any doctrine starts removing basic rights - it's a massive flashing warning sign and time for an electorate to stand up and vote to resist all future attempts at changing/removing the rights granted under the constitution of a nation. Sounds like this time as come. Shit - we are talking about a nation which did have valid claims to being a genuine democracy - sad stuff!!

Are you sure it was banned? I was under the impression it was just given an X rating and all distributors in the US refused to release it. Any information on this is appreciated. It also can't be 50 years though, I though this was made in the early 70's?

As for the movie, I don't know what to say about it. On one hand, it's pretty fucked up to think this stuff went on. On the other, it's one of the most grotesque movies I've ever seen.

Correct - produced in 1971 and sure is grotesque and in the same style as others in the series. It's hard to find references with actual substance, but here's a limited review of the Mondo Cane series of movies:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_f...rid=112574301/

which concentrated on the more bizzare aspects of human activity. Tho Goodbye Uncle Tom is a "pseudo documentary", the producers have stated in courts that their research is accurate - tho sure, the object is to shock and although these incidents did happen, they are prob encapsulated for total impact.
