What most of the blog directories that require a recip link are missing

Dear blog directory owners. Ask yourself a question. Have you been an owner of a quality established blog, would you like to get listed in your own directory?

Why don?t you look at it from the point of view of a blog owner. Let?s pretend you are a webmaster who runs a truly quality blog, and is very cautious to whom he links to. Would you put a mainpage (or even sitewide) link to a new (or even established) blog directory? I am more and more inclined to think it?s not worth it.

It?s like when you have an established high-PR site and then someone comes to you and says, hey, give me a link from your main page. My site is new, you know, but when enough people link to me, it will have a good PR and I?ll send you good traffic. As we all know this rarely happens. Go over traffic trades / gallery requests search forum and see what linking partners the people with PR4 and above sites are looking for. You?ll be surprised. They all want to swap links with:
1. Quality
2. Theme related
3. high-PR
resources. Preferably if it?s a-b-c trade (I asked one link list owner if he could list me if I linked back from another PR2 page of mine, but he said ?it would be too complicated?)

If you build a free site which has no traffic and no PR and put 12 recip links to link lists, it?s fair. You?re giving them content, they?re giving you traffic and hopefully PR. But when you already have an established resource, with quality traffic, bookmarkers and high PR, I don?t think it?s a good idea to give directories all at once (quality content, high PR and traffic) for virtually nothing in return. I?m listed in several of directories and the most of them (even established ones) send me as much as 5-10 hits a week.

Plus, it is not that good for my SEO to put a link to unrelated resource on my page. So basically I am HARMING myself!

As a result, all those new blog directories that require a recip link end up listing a bunch of crappy blogs/splogs the owners of which already have some 100 links to other crappy resources and do not care if there will be yet another link.

Surfers come to such directories, see what is listed there, quickly understand that it is mostly crap and move away. And we all wonder why directory traffic is so hard to convert.

If you want to run a quality directory, why not fill it with quality sites?

Haha, sure. I bet it will get more exposure and spur more discussion there. Doesn't have a huge chance of surviving on GFY, unfortunately.

I laugh at all the morons who start some new directory, link list etc. but expect you to link to them with a recip from your PR3, 4 site to their PR0, 1, 2... LOL...

i've only had my blogs up for a short time, and i'm already getting pretty fed up with blog directories, and more specifically, blog directory owners. while it is true that directories are supplying me with a little traffic for now, i'm really not sure if i'll be keeping their links on my sites for very long. i find i send them far more traffic than i receive already, and the space i waste on my page for 30 blog directories, could easily be used for much higher quality links. i think even off-topic niche hardlinks are better off then blog directories, but who am i to say...

you hit the nail on the head with this one man, and it is something I have been bitching about for ages

What I did with a lot of my directory submissions is measure traffic from past use, and those that send traffic back get a nice spot on my sidebar, those that don't get a nice link on my "links" page, which is a links page linked from the bottom of my main page, it has no PR and doesnt get any traffic

Well I get my blogs into the first page results in Google just by submitting to directories so they can most definitely help you in the search engines!

But of course if you want to be the new fleshbot or someone else real big or cool like that then yeah you shouldn't go the route of "generic porn blog with 50+ links to directories with more crappy blogs in them".

hi Jace, nice to see you here. How's buyblogspots doing?

As for moving directory links to a separate page, that would be a good solution if they allowed it. Maybe I shall try to sign up with their links already at my "links" page and see if they will accept me? ;)

My annoyance is that many don't update their directories for ages (if at all). So, I am linking to them but they aren't to me.

My dear blog owner,

I send you 5 hits a week from my directory but you send me 1 (ONE) - you're still better off. I list your BRAND NEW PR0 blog on my well established PR3 directory (and this is how the SEs will find you), if you don't see the benefit in that please revisit Webmastering 101.

But you want to submit your blog and get 3000 hits a day? Well, stick to TGPs then, many people called their TGPs blogs and if they make a buck or two you should do the same, blogs are about SE traffic and bookmarks IMO but yet again I could be wrong.

I am not forcing you to submit to my directory, am I? Well, if you don't feel like submitting then don't, as simple as that, if you do, please follow the rules - burying my link on page 12 of your blog which is not even linked to your index page (as so many try to do) won't get you listed.

Have a nice day

Hi Antonio,

you're talking about brand new pr0 blogs, while i'm talking about quality developed one year old PR4 blog (let's take the one in my sig for example).

My point was that by not suggesting non-recip placement options, the directories are doomed to list only lower-quality blogs.

Why, I did that with many directories, and now my directories are PR5-6 and the sites that linked are still at the same ole pr3-4's

Get a clue before you mock shit, directories are for nothing more than weaving directional paths for spiders

your pr3 means shit, just means it's been there one update before

I'll gladly take my pr5-6's and link to a 0, because I will give them rank, and then that rank will be used for my other sites in the same directory to extend their "PRESENCE" and award me even more

lol, I get your point, you want me to list your blog on my directory without a recip link so I can have "quality" content?

Well, feel free to list my directory on your blog without a recip for exactly the same reason, I believe that my directory is a quality one, it gets about 90% of the traffic from Google, it is easy to navigate, new blogs are added daily, plenty of categories... So slap a link on the index page of your blog, somewhere on top if you don't mind, make it a H1, thank you.

You're absolutely right, in your case the morons are the ones that linked to your 0 sites and ended up giving you the higher PR and more traffic then their blogs get. Unlike them, I'm not a moron and know that all of us are competitors.

Look, i don't mind having a separate page for all directories that list me. I don't mind linking to it from my main page. If this is enough to get listed please let me know.

And yes.. I think everyone must VALUE their work. It's as difficult to build a good blog as a good directory (if not more)

Blog submitted ;) The page with a recip link will always stay linked from the main page.

Will this do?
