Computer fan noise, help..

I just got a new computer today and it's all nice and fine..but the noise is fucking outrageous. It really sounds like someone is vacuuming next to me. I've been looking into some fanspeed controllers and shit. Any suggestions? Passive cooling isn't gonna work, and I don't know jack shit about water cooling.

The machine is a dual-xeon (5130), and motherboard is asus dsbv-d..if that helps anyone who knows anything.

take the side of the case off and see if one of the fans is moving differently then the others, like slower or a lot faster etc. You can stop them with something also to see which one is causing the noise and then look to replace it. Does it do it all of the time when the computer is on?

Make sure the processor fan is not upside down.

This may sound stupid, but I actually had this problem once and have heard other people had it as well.

Yeah. It's built inside a intel server case. They had to do some custom wiring etc. But the only problem is the outrageous humming from the fans..

Nope both of the processor fans are attached correctly. I'm not asking WHY it makes noise, I want to know what to do about it. There's no technical problem, the fans are just too 'efficient' to my taste.

you got 2 fans for processors?

damn.. not much can be done about that i'm afraid.

why didn't you get Core 2 Duo ? They are the best right now.

Xeon 5130 is a "Core 2 duo",
two dualcore processors....

Replace the fan. I bought a 3.4g P4 a while back. It was pretty top of the range at the time (obviously things have moved on since) but the fan noise was nasty. Fan was strictly linked to temp/workload and when doing anything intensive it was hard to hear anything over the noise from the fan.

The solution was simple - I shopped around for a half decent fan. For around £15 ($30) I got something so quiet I can't realy hear it and the temp is lower than before. Well worth the little bit of cash.

And in my case there was no fault. It was simply (and badly) designed with a shit, noisy fan in it.

Man thats annoying. How about long wires and putting the cpu in a closet or somewhere out of the room? Can't think of anything else other than replacing parts and all that business.

I know, but the 5100-series has the same architecture as core 2 duo. But I assume you know better, as always.

Why in earth would I send it back? What's the reasoning behind it?
"Can you please send me a less noisy machine which I plan to dedicate to video rendering? Oh, it's no big deal that it's way less powerful, as long as it's silent?"

hm, the newer PCs are much noisier for some reason (bigger fans???)

I know that there are special cases that are built to isolate the noise, they cost a bit more, I guess it doesn't hurt to ask the guys you got it form if they can swap the case for a few extra $$$

Yeah but it's slower.

Xeon 5130 = 2Ghz

x6800 (Core 2 Extreme) = 2.93 Ghz

(Price is different too, though. $350 vs $970)

Xeons are good for servers, where they need to take care of many processes at the same time (and they don't need to be uber fast)

I think Core 2 (at 2.94 Ghz) would still be faster for video rendering.

You dont run so many processes on your home PC. So One core takes care of rendering while Second core takes care of whatever you are doing in the meantime.

Except that for example vegas video can use both cores for rendering, which frees the entire other processor to handle photoshop and whaever else I do.

You have a lot of anger in you, first you told me what a piece of shit watch I bought, and now you're judging my computer choice. lol

.. sony people didn't answer my support ticket where I asked whether vegas supports 2 dualcores, that would seriously kick ass.. still in the process of restoring my data backups, so I can't even test.

You can use only 1 core for video rendering at the same time.
On Windows Vista you can use 2 cores, because it's 64 bit.

Why do you think i'm angry? I'm just saying that Core 2 processors are better for the kind of work you need done.

most fans change rpm's depending on the CPU temperature, they will kick higher and of course be noisier. Check your CPU temps, to make sure maybe its misset or a problem cpu.. If not, then see about a replacement, try newegg.com, just pop in the cpu type and search the 50000 fans available.... thermaltake makes good fans, but they can be noisy as well.. so read the reviews.

I'm not in north-america, and I'm not ordering anything from there. Hate customs assholes. Anyhow, I' contacted the guys who I bought this from and see if they have any bright ideas.. or I could just pay some teenage geek to set me up with water cooling.

Okay, I bought it today..so I don't think there's a huge amount of dust inside it. Secondly I don't think the 'vacuum' noise it makes is "the computer talking to me asking to be vacuumed".

Not directly related to you, but gosh darnit, I hate people who don't read threads and/or comprehend the point in them and reply regardless.

Actually, it sounds as if the person who set up the fans plugged them into the wrong place, or the firmware to manage fan speed isn't working properly.

Your motherboard should have a cd or dvd with a utility for this one it. Check and make sure the fans are connected to the motherboard in the right location,a and not directly connected to the powersupply (some server config places will hook them directly to the powersupply, assuming nobody cares about fan noise).
