Desktop Publishing Gurus: In Here Now (Please, With Sugar)

Well, phone just rang. Looks like I am gonna get saddled with a new job for my car club: take over the quarterly newsletter.

What software is best to use for SIMPLE desktop publishing (its gonna be printed here on my Xerox WorkCentre 7132, so if I can dump it to the printer on 11x17 and make it look right, then we are all set.) and wont cost me an arm and a leg.

Please don't tell me Quark Express, its neither cheap nor simple, but I may have to bite the bullet I am aware. Is there anything other than M$ Publisher for this kind of thing? Does anyone have a great two or three column template for OpenOffice.org 2 that would work?

Looks like InDesign is $500-600. Better fire up notepad.exe.

Ah yeah, someone did tell me that InDesign was favored over Quark now. But before I fire up notepad.exe, I'll fire up my FTP program and hit the warez sites.

all the mac heads are going to jump on me for this but if you want a simple program to use try corel draw ... I find it to be the most obvious and self explanatory to use. I always start designers on this program when i am training them as it isn't full of fluff that confuses us web designers like Quark & Illustrator.

Good luck!
