![]() Japan's Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings Saturday following a powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean and said that tidal levels had fallen 4 inches in Nemuro in northeastern Japan, a sign of a possible tsunami.

Maybe I am missing something but in the article:
"Earlier the agency had predicted waves as high as 3.3-feet could hit the northeastern coast of Japan's main island of Hokkaido around 2 p.m." 3 feet doesn't seem like it could do much damage. 33 feet we have a serious problem. |

3 feet of ocean surge is powerful. Its not just a wave, its a full swell that comes in very, very, very fast. Much more powerful than a 3 foot wave.

I don't think it's the height that's so important, but rather how much water is behind that firstl 3 feet. Because the water keeps coming so it gets higher and higher. So 3 feet could turn into 6 or 9.

It's not about the Amplitude (Height) of the wave that makes Tsunami's dangerous, it's the wavelength, (the length from the front to the back of the wave). The Tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed so many thousands was only 13 feet high.... waves twice that high hit Hawaii every day.... The difference is the wavelength of the wave. Whereas a normal wave will only have a wave length of maybe 6 to 10 feet, a Tsunami can have a wavelength miles long. The wave does not simply break on shore and stop, it keeps on coming and coming, piling up and coming inland as the water piles up behind it.
