Who was the greatest rock/metal guitar player of the late 80s-90s?

Who was the most influential guitar player in that genre, during that time?

Steve Via, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, or someone else?

Who do you think?

I'd say Yngwie. Satriani (and Eddie VH for that matter) kinda sold out and lost their edge.

Randy Rhoades died too soon or I'd have put him first.

I'm not going to say he was the most influential, but one of my personal favorites was George Lynch. The man defined Guitar God in every sense. It was a damn shame Lynch and Don Dokken just couldn't get along.

I liked him better with Lynch Mob. Killer band.

That opening riff in Wicked Sensation is forever in my mind.

Yngwie was a fucking wizard. I'm saw him at a small club show a few years ago and he looked like shit (I stopped counting at 4 chins) but he still fucking had it.

The greatest? not easy to say. But as for late 80's and early 90's Slash was cruel, also Kirk could play a solo in those years but they are still lightyears from Satriani and Vai though

The singer of that band...I think his name was Oni Logan or something like that...went to one of my high schools, Plantation High School in Plantation, Fl., and sang for one of my friend's bands. He had a hell of a voice but was trying to be another Don Dokken. The opening riff in Wicked Sensation is absolutely one of the best ever.

I honestly didn't know he was still playing. I could imagine him looking like shit by now. He was living life a little fast way back when...

Yes, that was his name. Great singer though, another great.

Ray Gillian was always my fav from Badlands. RIP. And Jake E Lee was an incredible player as well.

Badlands was fucking great. What was the opening song on their first CD...I think it was Live Wire? That also had an incredible opening riff.

I think as late as a few months ago he was still touring. Before I left the Dayton/Cincinnati area he was playing a show at Bogarts in Cincy on Vine St. I can't remember who his new singer was but he was pretty good, although he might have already been replaced (you know how Yngwie was with singers).

Angus Young, was probably the best live performer, but from a musical point of veiw, Joe Satriani. Yngwie, has my vote for excellent solo performance.

Slash?

I will give it to G&R for being a great rock band, but I'm not sure if I would give the guitar award to Slash, though he had "rock star" down to an art. I think maybe if he was not a drunk he could have really been a much better player.

That guy stold a slice from me one night at the Rainbow in Hollywood. He was dating my friends ex wife for a while. I hated that bitch.
Definitely one of the most talented singers I can remember though. I saw him when he was with Ferrari at the Roxy one evening. Couldnt believe it. Hella talented.

As far as those that say Slash, I have to HIGHLY disagree with you on that, he was decent, but not good enough to be considered the greatest.

I have to agree with lusciousness and say Yngwie Malmsteen

It's hard to say who the most influential was, since most of the great guitarists developed their own style. Some who were great technical/virtuoso guitarists like Joe Satriani, also didn't sell that well.

Lots of guitarists imitated/emulated Eddie Van Halen and Kirk Hammett.

At the same time their were other guitarists that were better at writing melodies, or just plain rocking.

Since this is a guitar thread, even though they weren't metal style, I really liked what John McLaughlin and Steve Morse were doing around that timeframe.

Best of all time for me however still remains Jimi Hendrix...
