I was reading that the crime rate is sky rocketing in CR.. is this true? A article about it, seems to be a lot of home invasions and so on. Is this true?

I don't know much about the statistics. However, I do know that if you're smart and you protect yourself, chances are you'll be okay. I live in a condo with 24/7 armed guards, an electric gate that only they can open for you, and high walls with barbed wire surrounding the compound.

The bottom line is that I don't feel more unsafe in San Jose than any other city in the United States.

Doesn't sound so safe if you have to have armed guards and barbed wire fences. I don't want to live as a prisoner in my own home.

That's actually the standard here. Every place is locked and gated up like that but you get used to that. The reason for this is pretty obvious: anyone that DOESN'T have the bars and the gates will be the target. Coming to Costa Rica and seeing this was shocking/scary at first, but now I don't give it a second thought. You stop seeing all the barbed wire after a while and just see home.

i had a 24/7 guard & 'gated community' Like viki said.. at first your kinda like WTF but after you dont notice it really.
The places without gates & bars are the ones that get hit up.
Ive known a few ppl that got mugged (but I know ppl here in mtl that got robbed too so...)
Saw a few more shootings in CR than mtl but just dont fuck with the colombians ;p
End result - if your smart about things (regardless where you are) you'll be ok.

I have 10 foot fences topped with Razor Wire, 3 Rottweilers, a carry permit and a shit eating grin. No problem.

Mexico is no more dangerous than the US.

In fact, I have not had any issues here in mexico, but someone tried to steal my truck in San Deigo.

With all due respect, sounds to me like natural selection in action.

Lived there for 16 years. Never had an incident.

You get over the barbed wire and bars and armed guards pretty quick. Just stay outa the shady parts of town at night and you're fine.

Has nothing to do with statistics, but I was looking to move there and I've seen several reports that crime was getting out of hand there. So I figured I'd ask around.

I also noticed while looking at houses online, pretty much all of them had huge security gates and so on even saw one that had razor wire across the top of the fence. LoL sorry but that's doesn't seem like it's normal to me.

The whole notion of "the ones that don't have it are the targets" tells me a lot. I was planning on checking the place out, but just seems like if crime is going to be a issue especially gang crime, then I'm not going to waste my time.

Costa Rica is classified a third world country by the United Nations. You're not going to get US-style living here. Not bad, just different. Once you get over the differences in the way things are here socially, you don't even notice the razor wire anymore =). If you're looking for the same standard of living that you're getting in the US, you're not going to get it here. There isn't a police presence in costa rica like that in the US. Because of that extra security measures (such as bars and razor wire, as well as pump-shotgun weilding guards outside of banks) are here. I have no problem strolling out of my complex at 11 at night to go to the store to get some soda or whatever, it's all about where you live. Obviously you're not going to move into some neighborhood where they're going to mug and shoot you the minute they see a gringo. But that goes for everywhere. If i was back in california I wouldn't be walking around the ghetto in inglewood at 11 at night, my cracker ass would get shot. You basically have to take the advantages of living here along with the distadvantages. I feel perfectly safe here.

P.S.

My only real complaint about this country is that I can't get a decent carne asada fucking burrito with some salsa verde.

I have seen some crime but never been affected. I dont live there but spend about 120 or so days year there. I take cabs but have walked from El pueblo (north of SJ) to barrio dent after midnight. Even from Dent to Lujan in the southern part of the city at 3 am. Not smart but just keep your eyes out and be ready. Just like any major US city. If you'd like to run in fear of your anal virginity stroll through Parque Morazan... the tico with the nice rack and mini skirt will give help you set the new land speed record! Pura Vida
