Bad ratios with the big sponsors?

I've always done best pushing the big programs. It seems like lately that ratios for the big programs have been getting worse and worse. Maybe it's saturation or something.

Is anybody else seeing this?

Been seeing lots of refferal code stealing trojan threads on GFY. Seems to me the virus writers would be hitting the big sponsors over us smaller guys?

I didn't know they ever stopped it. I doubt Zango is 100% to blame. I have a lot of my stuff set up so Zango can't get to my codes anyways.

Jay, I think you may be seeing two problems:

1) Same old same old: Many of the bigger programs are in repeats, that is dredgin up content from early in the site's development and reposting it as new. I have seen this on paysites from at least 2 or 3 programs I am dealing with. Others haven't shot any new content in a long time, and are stuck in a sort of 2004 timewarp.

2) The downside of "mega site pass" memberships. 30 sites for the price of one effectively kills off the value of promoting these sites. Surfers could sign up for maybe a half dozen of these passes over a year and see hundreds of sites (and download all the content). Once they have this type of membership, they are burned off of all of the program's sites.

Combine all that with what I personally feel is some seriously hard ass scrubbing going on at the processing level, and we are lucky to see any signups some days.

Oh yeah, let me add this:

3) Dating / live chat sites: As time goes by, and as more people open accounts with them, the chance that the surfer you are sending is already a member goes up, especially if you promote the stuff with blind or semi-blind links (such as model lists). Once someone has signed up once inside their program, they will never, ever pay for that member again (doesn't matter if they are paying $100 for a member, because you can't sell to someone already sold). They can afford to keep raising the payouts partially because the percentage of new clients (versus already paid out members that you send back in traffic, so they don't have to pay again) is now in their favor.

One thing as well, smaller programs usually need more unique content to attract webmasters from the bigger programs. Look at the content that comes from Duke Dollars, Brutal Bucks, etc.

High quality content, different niches, great conversions ....

Things are down almost 30% since the start of the year. I am not the only one either. Others I know are in the same situation. There is something widespread going on and having a person like Jay post this scares me even more; because he has some great quality traffic; and if he is seeing bad results that means that a lot of others are seeing tons worse ...

Is it scrubbing, spy ware, ad ware, oversaturation? Not sure just yet but something for sure is up

zango, no not causing 100% of the problem. All the other spyware and trojans out there, combined they easily could be a big part of the problem. They do focus on the bigger sites.

there's been a huge problem recently with trojans redirecting surfers via domain by messing with the DNS.

it could redirect a sponsor link back to the trojan owners own link codes (stealing the sales outright) as well as simply redirect traffic to any other site, such as using it for freesite feeder.

obviously this would be more likely to affect well known programs and sites that send all join hits to a common domain to a much greater extent than it would smaller programs where the trojan would not have the opportunity to affect as much traffic (and consequently be less likely to be the target of such an attack)

while none of this should have a direct effect upon the ratios - I think - (since your own hits wouldn't be counted in this instance) it could be very discouraging to potential buyers if they attempt to join "paysite A" and wind up on a TGP instead. how likely do you think those people are to join another paysite after being dicked around on the tour/join links from another site?

there've been a few threads about this recently that might be worth your time reading:
Attention ALL GFY MEMBERS. We're being robbed
Who will be the first sponsor to step up about the link code change / trojan problem?

Although this affects all types of traffic it seems to affect TGP/MGP traffic the most; however you have trades with many of those type of sites on your linklist

i believe its the torrent sites that steal many signups these days
many people today d/l full member sites via torrent sites
just search for any paysite on google and add torrent after it and you will
find that there is almost torrents for every site out there...

Jay, I won't mention the programs specifically, but two very well known (one runs probably the best known cum site) has started repeating content shot 4 or 5 years ago as "new". They update every week, but the content is retreads, not fresh, and it is obviously out of date (the image quality is 2002, not 2007).

Here's the deal - that isn't an end user trojan - that is a server based deal. Basically, the trojan messes with apache directly and redirects some users through an 85.199.x.x IP address, looking to install spyware and backdoors onto vulnerable surfer machines - the surfer then gets bounced back like nothing happened (and the referal is covered up with the original requesting URL, so it doesn't show up in the logs very clearly).

I have seen it now on at least one major link site and a couple of TGPs, and certainly there are more out there.

I would recommend that everyone out there using any third party software ask their host to check their installed version of apache for little add-ons and modifications, and when it doubt, to recompile a new kernel and install it just in case.

are you sure? http://lists.sans.org/pipermail/unis...er/026937.html

looks to me like this is something being distributed to end users. asking them to install a codec and then changing DNS requests

Huh, yeah fooled me. I have been trying to pull off all traffic to sites that have been out for a long time unless they are selling really well.
