Should I form AFK Registry and submit a .Kids Proposal to Icann next time around?

How many of you would unite as a collective and pool some resources to do something like this?

even if its not me, which we all know that although I am somewhat edumacated and sometimes speak well, I am not the person that should be talking to authority. I can surely say the wrong thing.

What say you? Who here would put some of their money where their mouth is?

Free Filtering Software designed by a developer of our choosing approved by a panel, that will be GIVEN to anyone that wants it.

3.99 domain names just like the cost of a happy meal.

Legislation through representatives at the federal level involving FSC, ASACP, and whoever else would hold our hands. Why they are not doing this already I am sure has something to do with something and I wouldn't want to speculate.

We as an industry can try at least to sink stuart the ferrari seeking robber before he gets a chance to try and come back.

Who would contribute? Who would support? What does something like this cost?

I may be excited enough about this to go with it.

Yay or Nay

Take responsibility for ourselves, we are some of the most technically advanced people on the whole internet as a collective. If anyone could make this work on a technical level it would be us, our ISPs, and our tech prowess.

Opinions?

It's a good idea as I've posted it myself.. Problem comes in with regulating who can use the .kids extension. The only way to make it safe for kids is for the sites allowed to use the extension would have to be heavily regulated and approved to use the extension.

So in theory it sounds good, but this is not a small task. Beside that how would you ever regulate who could buy them? I'd support it, but it's just one of those things that sounds better on paper than it really is in the real world.

Yes that would definitly be a great idea, and it would open a new market... right now the kids sites are a little complicated for kids.

the concept is simple.

no one would buy .kids except big comanies like ToyrRus ets.

but if .xxx passes, the people behind it make millions.

not too hard to figure out.

.kids went nowhere.

I'd totally support. I think that it's a great idea and always thought that they needed a .kids extension.

But as crockett mentioned, it would have to be heavily regulated. It couldn't just be anybody buying a .kids domain name.

http://www.icannwatch.org/articles/0.../0414212.shtml from 2005

Quote:
"Two years after the USG mandated childsafe second level domain kids.us opened for business, it hosts, one can hardly say boasts, a scant 21 live websites.
a tightly regulated tld will not make millions, .xxx WILL. Therefore, they choose to go .xxx instead.

Quote:
Some in the US Congress were critical of ICANN after it failed to okay a .kids TLD in its 2000 new TLD round, Following an unsuccessful attempt in 2001 during which a dangerous precedent would have been set in which the USG would require ICANN to set up a .kids sTLD, Congress then overwhelmingly passed the (now apparently mis-named) DotKids Implementation and Efficiency Act of 2002
.kids is old, and if the people in control of this stuff WANTED .kids, it would be.

21 sites vs every .xxx you can think of, follow the money.

I strongly support the .kids concept, as outlined in the "Stuart Lawley is pissed coz he's a jackass" or whatnot thread. I'll help out any way I can.

A .kids proposal was made by the same wonderul folks over at ICM who tried to bestow .xxx upon us, wasnt it? It got shot down for lack of interestet from the sponsored community, as far as I know (I could be completely wrong, here).

Seems like it would put ICANN in the same position of being the final arbiter of content for domains, which is part of the reason they have avoided .xxx.

How about bypassing the ICANN buerocracy all together, and getting some venture capitol and starting a private company that develops a safe network over its own protocol. Customers would be able to lock out all other traffic to and from their computer except for the specialized port this protocol would use. Include a custom web browser, and make sure it only accepts connections from companies with approved websites/content. Build up enough interest and you can charge any company a nice premium for the privilege of being included in this network, as well as the end user.

Either approach is going to be a long and hard fight, but with the right sales/marketing people and the developers to back them up it just may work.

Yeah, apparently ICM was in on the original .kids malarky. To have the adult industry push for and win the .kids TLD would be a major blow against ICM. Of course, that's merely icing on the cake.
