The Best New England State to Live In?

Just curious which state people consider the best to live in in the New England area? There are various reasons for wanting to live there (and for sun nuts the lack of heat is one) but which is the best state up that way in your opinion?

We were originally looking at Vermont but the State as a whole seems a little too uptight and conservative.

Wouldn't this depend on what kind of job, lifestyle, routine, habits, tolerances for weather and seasons, proximity to family, opportunities and preferences that you have as an individual?

To an extent yes but generalisations are no bad thing, especially as people usually say why they like/dislike a place when you ask if they have an opinion.

For example I'd still rather hear from someone who hates the cold, is a true redneck and proud of it telling me about Vermont than having nobody at all reply because I'm being too specific.

You live in a nice state though. I have been there several times and loved it. I had a friend that lived in Norwell.

I spent a lot of summers in NH growing up. Beautiful lakes, nice people and warm summer days and cool nights.

New England is a beautiful area in general.

It really depends how close you want to be to the city, the ocean, other places - whether you want metro, suburban or rural - you need to provide more info on the type of place you'd like to live...

I live in Connecticut if the living expenses weren't so high I would like it here. Just stay away from Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport, Middletown (actually Mtown isn't so bad) and other such get yourself killed cities.

I'm a native New Englander.
I spent most of my life as a Masshole in the state of Massivetwoshits. The place is pretty much a fucking toilet.

There are many nice places in MA, but generally, as a state, the place fucking sucks because of excessive taxation, stupid laws, extremely difficult gun laws, high insurance rates, excessive high rents/cost of living & an excessively & unneccesary concentration of third world & spanish speaking scum invading every city.

I've lived in Maine for some time.. beautiful place. a bit more relaxed, though portland is a shithole & I can't tell you much about their taxes, laws as I haven't lived there that long, but home prices are great there.

Vermont is wonderful... relaxed & virtually no gun laws CCW w/ no permit required. Relaxed, stress free living.. very low home prices.. alot of snooty people who think their shit don't stink though,,,

Rhode Island is a mostly spanish speaking ghetto.. fucking shithole & half.. don't bother.

New Hampshire is great.. virtually tax free, relaxed gun laws, many wonderful areas although like every state, has it's own shitholes as well & seems the scum that took over the rest of New England have started sending their scouts up north in search of new territory to take over & ruin.

I've lived in Massachusetts (near the Cape) most of my life but loved living in New Hampshire and Maine, too.

Upper Maine is great if you want privacy but it's hell on business. New Hampshire is beautiful and close enough to Boston to make it worth it. The things said about RI are pretty much right on target.

Our winter in Massachusetts was mild -- about 8" of total snow all winter long though we've seemingly had high winds for 2 months now.

Summers can be hot and humid but the fall is beautiful

I lived in RI for seven years (and grew up 20 minutes from it). Most of it, especially along the coast is gorgeous and NOT a spanish speaking ghetto (in fact, most of the people there who don't speak english there speak portugese - it's the only place i've ever seen that has two language choices on the ATM machines, english and portugese). If you are looking for somewhere that is gorgeous with a small town feel, not overrun by urban crap, yet very close to a small city with wonderful restaurants (Providence) and close a big city with everything else (Boston) - you couldn't do better than the Barrington/Bristol area.

There many great areas along the coast in Massachusetts that are similar. But yes, the taxes are killer - the same as in any liberal urban state.

Maine is probably the best state in NE. There is a big senior citizen population though.

Rhode Island is terrible, and has THE highest taxes in the whole country. CT is taxey too.

Massachusetts is OK, they have gotten their taxes under control, but housing is very expensive.

New Jersey has high taxes too. And it is way too urban.

I live in Boston and love this city, but if I were to recommend a New England state it would have to be New Hampshire for all the reasons previously stated. In fact, the only drawback of NH is all the Massholes who are moving there and driving up real estate prices, but you can still get much more property there for your buck than what you'd get anywhere near Boston. New Hampshire's laws let grown-ups make decisions for themselves. MA is the nanny state as well as being Taxachusetts.

I am guessing you haven't been to RI recently. There are still some nice coastal areas, but Providence is now very poor and very Spanish. RI is a welfare state.

Live in NY Metro area and visit the New England area often. Have friends up that way as well. Overall I like the New England states a lot. Very beautiful. Vermont being my favorite. Some cool Vermont towns: Middleburry, Bennington, Brattleboro, and Burlington to name a few. I find Vermont and New Hampshire to be pretty progressive states.

North Western CT (Litchfield County) is very nice and so is Northampton, MA.

I love Portsmouth, NH. Great small city. Very artistic and close to ocean, Maine and Boston area.

Big John, Here is something else to chew on:

Tax Group Says N.H. Tax Burden Among Lowest In Country

CONCORD, N.H. -- A new study said New Hampshire residents face the second lowest state and local taxes in the country, behind only Alaska, which pays its residents dividends from oil revenue.

New Hampshire ranks 49th for the fourth year in a row, according to the study from the Tax Foundation. The nonpartisan research group said New Hampshire residents pay 8 percent of their income in taxes.

The group reported that nationwide, Americans paid 11 percent of their incomes in state and local taxes last year.

According to the study, Vermont had the nation's highest total state and local tax burden, at 14.1 percent of residents' income. Maine was second, at 14 percent.

You can read this for your self at WPTZ's web site.

I grew up in Vermont and we had the greatest state until 12 Years of that dick head Howard Dean. Him and his special interest asshole mother fuckers, really fucked up our state. We would have been screwed like you cant even imagine if Howard Dean becomes president.

I like the idea of Vermont except for the reasons you stated. You look into the 'seedier' side of Vermont and it almost seems not to exist. OK if you have a family you don't want a strip bar on every corner but you can go too 'safe' and that can cause problems in itself if you're a little more liberal in your outlook.

Vermont appeals because we like mountains and love snowsports. However it's not vital just an added bonus.

Myth. Look at a Massachusetts tax bill.

Look at our insurance rates. We can't shop at Geico as our commissioner sets the rates and that's what we pay. Period. All the best companies pulled out of the state.

I'm having fun this weekend. Not sure if I should be though. We're in and out of the hospital while my girl's mom is having some new cancer treatment.

We both like cute girls though, so that's a plus.

I have lived in most of NE. I have also lived in CO. Vermont sucks never live there. They are morons beyond belief. Maine or NH or MA coast is where it is at.

If you like sun, a bit of winter, and more sun then move to CO. My plan is to move back there shortly.

What's the place that "Murder She Wrote" is in?

That place looks like the 'all American' place I would like - or the "Gilmore Girls" - I love that sort of place.

Cold winters, hot summers. fishing and lots of gossip.

I go back fairly regularly - and I wasn't talking about Providence, I was talking about the rest of the state. Barrington, Newport, Foster-Gloster...there are lots of areas of RI that aren't Providence, Pawtucket or Central Falls.

Maine is great if...

You can work from home.
You can see yourself enjoying winter sports.
You're willing to sacrifice nightlight (there's a little one in portland, Maine but that's about it).

It is an extremely affordable place to live, and quite pretty with zero traffic and less than 20 state cop cars from border to border.

It's where we were thinking of TBH although need to look into it from all angles hence the thread. Oddly enough we will be working from home, do like winter sports a lot and these days aren't into much in the way of nightlife

Oh shit...sorry to hear about her mother. I have so many friends that are in the same situation....too many people visiting Boston for the medical treatment.

Well that is nice to hear that you both like the girls You could create a bunch of new solo sites here I know an investor too

I'm in S.E. Connecticut, born and raised. I've lived all over the country including time in both Florida and Alaska. I ended up right back here.

It's expensive to live in CT, taxes and insurance rates are higher than average, property values are a little high but stable. Winters are a bitch but I work at home so I could give a fuck. Spring, Summer and Fall are worth the 3 months of cold.

I live within 20 minutes of the largest casino in the world (Foxwoods) and 10 minutes from another (Mohegan Sun). I'm less than 5 minutes from a river with direct access to L.I. Sound (love my boat). I'm also almost exactly halfway between NYC and Boston with a rail service that can get me to either in no time.

Yeah CT has it's downside, but we all know why CT doesn't float away. Because Mass, RI and NY suck!

PS Have a condo in NH. Love it there too.
