9/11 - A year later

It's almost been a year since the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.
I bought a commemorative magazine the other day, and I have to say that the images and the memories of that day are still very disturbing.

What I'm wondering, though, is what has changed since that day and what affects all of you because of it? I'm in Canada, so I don't really feel a huge change in day to day life here because of it, but I'm wondering what daily life in the US is like since the attacks.

The only thing I really have noticed is that in the first 6 months or so after the attacks, I saw a huge increase in security at airports, but I have to say that I find the security has fallen back to what it once was. Maybe I'm just not noticing new measures that are in place (or I'm not supposed to notice).

But almost a year later, reading through this thread reminds me of that morning and still gives me chills...

I remember the day well, because me and my Girlfriend are aniversary is the September 11, so when she got the flowers for are love, those plan hit in teh states.

I was out of town working, and i got some flowers delieverd to her, and like 15 minutes later, i heard the sounds of the close by military base (In CAnada) go live, everything was so weird, you saw about 50 Army trucks leave to go protect (in case of emergency) the Near by Nuclear Power plant.

Plus, i was in New York City for a week in Mahantan in January, got alote of pictures of me and the Girlfriend in from of the WTC.

Maybe Canada is not the best Country but we did what we could do to help the US. And will keep helping them in the long journy against Terrorist.

The pictures were so disturbing because something finally affected us.. The US government does a great job of keeping things level, so when something like that happened it rocks us all out of our slumber.. What kills me is that pictures like this are taken all over the world and we care so much less.. People say it's because "we can't do anything about it" but I for one haven't done anything about the WTC incident either and that's not so far away. To say that the US people don't care about the rest of the world is ludicrous too.. There are SO many US and Canadian citizens in other parts of the world right now helping people out with their own problems too..

The other day I saw a picture of a woman whose house was destroyed by the flooding, just crying.. She was 74 years old, and every little thing she had saved during her life was destroyed. She had no bank account, everything she had was in the house. So sad.

Then I remember a story retold to me through an essay by Michel de Montaigne (everyone should read his essays!) of a man in Roman times I believe who came home from a trip to find his village destroyed.. He went to his home and found his wife and children dead in the yard and his house burnt down.. He left and was walking through a town when someone stopped to ask if he was okay.. He explained what had happened, and the man said "Why don't you look sad?" and he said "Because everything I am is inside me, they only took my things, they haven't taken anything that was truly mine." I think this is true.. Even his wife and family were a part of him as much alive as dead.. They helped him become who he was, and so were a part of him.. Nobody could take that away from him.

Thanks for the post Chris

I was woke up that morining by one of my employees, he called and told my wife to wake me.

So I'm sitting on the bowl and I hear on the news that the FAA had shut down all flights over the US. I remember thinking.... wtf would cause them to close down all flights. I then walked into my office and sat down and saw the towers fall on the replays over, and over.

The Long Island Expressway was shut down straight into NYC, the emergency vehicles were flying back and forth all day.

I think the saddest part was watching people walking around looking for their loved ones.

I was lucky not to be in the city that day, and didn't know anyone personally that was murdered that day. But, I lost a big part of me when they fell. I used to play at the Trade Center when I was a kid. Then delivered to them when I was in my late 20's. I must have been in them thousands of times.

but 9/11/02 would be the perfect time to attack again, since everybody in the US will be watching the news to find out if someone will attack. imagine the terror possibilities.

but its likely no attack will happen. the media will love it though - all those eyes staring at all of those ads.

I have to admit, I was a bit desensitized when I first saw it...I tuned in in time to see the second tower collapse...I rememebred being angry that then was the time for people to "feel patriotic"....also, being on the other side of the country, it didn't seem to hit me....until I found out a business colleague was there on business and didn't make it out of the tower. So, I had my little bit of introspection a bit after others....I also saw my fears come true when I saw an endless parade of idiots on CNN talking about gladly giving up their liberty to feel safe....

while most people were in morning though, I just got more and more pissed...from the "hip rich kids" and their bullshit flag posteuring to the backlash against arabs in the states (some fucking unity, huh? suuure, only unity amongst the whites...)

on 9-11-02, I'll be sitting in front of the computer, no doubt sorting gay porn content and will probably just have a couple movies in the DVD player to be able to avoid all the endless repeats of footage and endless posturing of political candidtes who will jockey for position for by "looking more concerned than their opponent"...kinda like pornographers who like to appear to be "more against fringe porn" then their fellow porn pushers.......

i was sleeping in my frat house the day of sept 11, my friend woke me up around 11:30, and I was pissed he woke me up. He is that kind of kid, that is really into weapons and war, and is very knowledgable on stuff...he woke me up screaming, the WTC both just fell, the pentagon has been attacked as well...it wasnt a very fun way to wake up...i turned on the tv as they were replaying the towers falling, and my stomach sunk really quickly. I tried calling home, (i live in north NJ) and all phone lines were locked up....finally i got through and found out my family was ok. Being in a large frat at a business school, many of my friends worked in NYC, and some even worked in the towers. So we basically sat around receiving phones calls from people saying they were ok. All my friends made it out ok, except for one of my friends brothers who was unfortunately killed that day. He was 24, and made it out, but went back in to help people out. My parents also had a friend who perrished in the buildings. A horrific and terrible day. One of my good friends was working in the financial building next door when the first plane hit. He said the force was so powerful it knocked him out of his seat. They all thought it was missles and we were being attacked. He said he looked out, and saw the first tower on fire. All the bosses told the people to go back to their seats and get to work....then the next tower got hit. He said he didnt listen to orders, and just ran outside. He said the first thing he saw was part of a rib cage. and saw body parts in the street, and ran to the ferry's which were still operating and hopped over to Hoboken. Scary shit....a day not to be forgotten.

I hear that the airlines in the US will be offering free flights for 9-11 this year. I wouldn't fly that whole week if they paid me to do so.

I learned the news after finishing classes from a friend, he told me what happened but of course couldn't really believed it. In the way back to home I saw people in the street talking about it and even people crying. Then I realised things must had been really bad....later on when I arrived and watched the news at TV it was like living a bad dream. You know it's a bad dream, you feel it and you just waiting to wake up from the nightmare......but it didn't happen.

By chance, I had decided to take that tuesday off, because I wanted an extra day for the weekend. at 7:00 brett (BrettJ) called me. I groggily answered my phone, trying to sound coherent, When brett basically cut me off and said, "dude, don't go to work today."

"What are you talking about"

"Don't go downtown man ... have you seen the news?"

"No ... why?"

"The world trade center just got hit with a fucking airplane man! turn on the news!"

I don't really remember what we talked about after that... but we hung up shortly thereafter. I watched for another few minutes when the second plane hit ... then realized that we may be in for something crazy, and I suddenly got the urge to check in with my east coast colleagues ... first I tried to call fred from online, knowing that they were in the manhatten area (right?!?) and of course, got no answer. Then Bob and a few others. after a couple of failed dialings I realized that getting to anyone in NY was not going to work. So I called chad (Loster) and got through to him. We talked for a while about all the crazy shit that was going on, and we both fell silent when the first tower fell. That brief moment was followed by a lot of "Oh My God!"'s and "what the fuck?!"'s ... it was overwhelming. I couldn't do anything but sit in bed and watch tv for the first half of the day.

What a day that was. Nobody really knew what was going on or who would be next.
Come to think of it, we still don't know what's going on or who's going to be next.

This sounds all too familiar. Why didn't the US nab Sadaam? And why don't they nab Bin Laden? I mean seriously, they have the capability of any kind of military action, intelligence, infiltration, etc.. etc.. What is there to be gained by not apprehending these people?

Remember how i noticed the news.. I was sitting at work watching the swedish stock exchange.. then suddenly blam.. general index dipped -8% in 5mins.. wondered wtf.. went looking at the major newsites and read the news about a little airplane had hit the wtc towers..
They didn't say it was a passenger plane first.. this was maybe some 10mins from first hit.. then we watched tv rest of the day..

I've learned that the quickest way to tell something is happening in the world is to monitor the realtime stockexchange.. it's faster than cnn etc..

Sept 11, like the JFK assassination is an event where everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when they found out. I heard about the first explosion on the radio that morning on my way home.

When I got home I flipped on the TV to see a live shot of the first building on fire. A few minutes later I saw the second plane fly into the background and disappear behind the second tower. I remember thinking "wtf??" but didn't even consider that the plane would crash into the other tower (at this point there were only rumours that the first explosion was caused by a plane).

A few seconds later there was a huge explosion on the second tower. I remember being impressed by the explosion, just like another hollywood special effect until it hit me that I had just witnessed hundreds or even thousands of people die.

It's still hard to think about it. I've since seen the videos of dozens of people jumping from the flaming towers and read countless first hand accounts. It does seem like the year has gone by really fast too.

I was awoken around 10AM by numerous phone calls telling me to turn on the TV right away. Shortly after that i got in my car heading on the belt pkway towards the city to get a view of the WTC. It was about 10 mins into my ride when the second tower came down. I like many other new yorkers sat on the belt pkway pulled over watching this horrible event happen.

All you saw was a mushroom cloud ingulf lower mahatten.

Im still sick to my stomach watching it on CNN and reading about it in the paper every day.

I did not know anyone killed thanks god, the sadest thing that brings tears to my eyes are the funerals for all the 300 + FDNY hero's. Were i live a few of these great hero's lived and were stationed, sadly there are still every few weeks a random funeral or memorial for the local hero's around here.

I would not call the killing of 3,000+ people on live tv "entertainment". If that was your wife or father i dont think you would be saying that.

I remember that day like it was yesterday...

When I first saw the pics of the first plane I knew what was going on... I knew the a/c and I knew the situation.

I sat at my desk and thanked God... my wife is a UAL flight attendant that has often flown all of those routes. I knew she was safe home in bed and I counted my blessings.

Then my thoughts shifted to all of our friends that where flying that day... hoping and praying that they were ok. I headed home and the phone didn't stop ringing all day... family, friends, flying partners, etc.

In fact, it didn't stop for about a week.

* still counting his lucky stars *

Why??

Not counting 9/11.. These guys go into BURNING homes to save lifes on a daily basis..

Possibly your home one day...

In my book that would classify them as a hero, hero is to SMALL of a word.. These people put there lifes on the line for YOU AND I 24/7.

$31k is not enough to get me running into a burning house.

LOL! Mostly they sit around on their arses playing cards. Most of them probably only joined up so they could put on a uniform and have a better chance with trashy chicks who are impressed by that sort of shit.

Sorry, they chose their career. Nobody forced them to become a fire fighter. Is an electrician who gets electrocuted on the job a hero too?

This 9-11 myth making apalls me.

What a piece of shit. You have to be kidding me... Once again someone makes a post without having any clue.

Most Firemen do their job because they love their job. They are not in it for the money or the pat on the back.

I'm not talking about pay. I just don't think anyone who willingly gets hired as a firefighter, knowing its a job that could be life threatening, then dies in the course of their duty, is a hero.

If someone off the street did it, then that's a different story.

he·ro Pronunciation Key (hîr)
n. pl. he·roes

1. In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods.
2. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.
3. A person noted for special achievement in a particular field: the heroes of medicine. See Synonyms at celebrity.
4. The principal male character in a novel, poem, or dramatic presentation.

Let's see...

"A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life"

No courage involved??? No nobility of purpose??? No sacrafice of life???

Uh hun... go on!

For what? To learn how to become a firefighter? You don't get it do you? They do their job because of the love for it. It has nothing to do with money, girls, or being a hero.

I hope one day you come across a situation where you need the assistance of a firemen. And I hope he kindly returns the favor of disrespect you have given all firemen across the world.

Look dude, I was there during the attack. I didn't see the first building collapse but I watched the second one fall. I could smell the smoke and all. After seeing everything that was goin on around the city I can't say that these guys are anything other than heros. I watched these guys rush to the scene all day with a look of terror in their eyes. After the first building collapsed they all know this could be their last call. It's not unlike a kid enlisting in the army when there is no war then all of a sudden war breaks out. That kid never imagined he could end up on a battlefield. Same thing applies here.

These dudes had to rush into one of the most horrifying scenes you could imagine. There was so much smoke no one could see or breathe. You could smell the burning, plastic, paper, steel, flesh... you name it. People were falling out of the sky. Everyone knew if you didn't make it out of the building after a certain time you were already dead but they had to go into the heart of this madness anyway. They didn't sign up for that. No one is 'prepared' for that. These were the same guys you could catch at a regular bar. They weren't some super prepared and trained 'hero' types. But they went in and saved whoever they could and died in the process.

How often does that happen?
