If You Were Buying A New Comp Tomorrow, Would You Want It Come To With Vista Or XP ??

I need one asap and i'm not too excited about the thought of Vista...

I've been using vista since the RTM build came out, and i haven't had many troubles with it.

XP was just as buggy when it came out.

Vista, you will be forced to upgrade one day anyway, so might as well get it for free now...

I will also have to say OSX.4 especially after using Vista and laughing at how much it tries to copy Mac OSX.4

...oh and it still freezes and crashes randomly

My Mac has never crashed in the 6ish months Ive owned it, apart from when using "MICROSOFT messenger for mac".

I really like Vista, but the only major issue I have run into is that harly anything have drivers made for Vista, right now my video camera and printer are DOA due to no drivers.

I would only buy a Win XP pc right for the foreseeable future because I run so many complex programs (incl.. for video editing, encoding etc) that may or may not have driver or performance issues with Vista. Plus I am familiar with XP. Hell I still run the Windows "classic" interface even in Win XP since it is easy to deal with. (I hate flying or moving windows or menus)

All my pcs are Dells and although there is some extra b.s. pre-installed, it is nothing that detracts or that you cannot uninstall easily enough. I just picked up a dual 2.4 Ghz processor Core 2 Duo Dell Dimenson with 4 Mb cache brand new in teh box off of ebay for $700 that halved my hdv--> wmv, quicktime, real etc encoding times compared to the Pentium D 3.0 Ghz system I am still using for hdv capturing and editing.

Vista if pre-installed on a new PC. We bought one recently as it was the only choice of OS for the machine we wanted, but have had no problems at all with it and of course if you're into gaming and want the latest DX features...

As was said above, eventually all will be Vista so why not grab it now? Bugs haven't been an issue (again on a machine pre-installed with it. I wouldn't switch to Vista yet on any of our older machines). As for the over-zealous security...turn it off.

Make sure you call'em and don't order online. Their online shop only offers Vista as OS. XP is a much safer bet at this point. Also, if it's a laptop you want, make sure you get a 7200 HDD, some models don't come with that option via the online shop. You'll get less storage but a faster machine, the HDD is really the biggest bottleneck. If you need more storage just buy an external HDD.

Depends on which product line you get. The XPS series looks to only offer Vista (aside from one model), but if you order from the "Small business" section, you can choose between the two.

XP until Vista has their SP1 out. All the major corporations are holding off. There's no compelling reason to go to vista unless you like spending $$$ on beefier hardware.

Well the file structure on vista is nicer, and runs smoother, along with the search functionality being 100% better.

Interesting thing about threads like these are the amount of lemmings following the heard with their replies with no experience of the subject at hand.

I had to pick up a couple of laptops for the company last week and they came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic.

I have played around with the operating system and thus far I am disliking it. Vista seems to add nothing more to my user experience than some better graphics. This however does come at a price because the pre-installed version of Vista seems to run as if I have tried to install Windows XP Pro on my old 468DX4. You'd think a pre-installed version would run smooth as eggs right?

Another thing which annoys me heavily is that I constantly have to give permission to run even the most legit programs. Yes, I even have to give permission to run windows components and Microsoft applications! Why? I never had any issues with these on Windows XP Pro? I never had a virus either, or a trojan horse. I always had a good virusscanner, firewall and the latest security updates.

One more thing which makes me thinking of re-installing Windows XP back on the new notebooks, even though this is probably going to cost me even more money, is that some applications are not yet compatible with Vista. What the bleep? Where is my added value if some of my most loved programs do not seem to function? Also, can anybody tell me why my laser printer will not be detected under Windows Vista, even though it works perfectly under XP?

As you could read, this is just one experience. I am sure Windows Vista Premium Megagood Eyecandy 6 will run heaps better on my main workstation with a staggering 4GB RAM and 3.7Ghz processor. But you know, I favour functionality over graphics in my operating system. It should not hold me back from my daily activities and Vista does.

Just two cents.

Then I guess I can consider myself fortunate to be living in a non-English speaking country, where they can't oursource that shit to India.

I had the choice I went with XP. No way I'm leaving my work in the hands of a relatively new, not very stable or compatible operating system.

Unless they recently changed their policy, if you have a Dell Precision Workstation tech support is US-based. Last I heard they only outsourced tech to India for their cheap, over-produced Dimensions.

There's a big difference when you shop at Dell and click "Home & Home Office" and "Small Business." I have a Precision and when I call tech I have always gotten US-based support.

As for my answer to the thread topic, because of Vista my next purchase will be a Mac
