I'm a homeowner. I have a small 1-bedroom apartment in a very good area in helsinki. I'm thinking of selling this and buying a nice 4-5 bedroom house 30 minutes outside of the city. Gotta think about it though, as the place I currently live in has doubled it's value the past 7 years...and it will only go up. Last time there was a real-estate 'crash', all other parts of town suffered except this.

I'd hate to get a mortgage to buy the house, that's why I'm considering selling this.. then again, I could easily rent this out for €750 profit per month, which is almost half of a montly mortgage payment.. I just *HATE* loaning money.

Can't you just take out a 2nd mortgage on your 1 bedroom to allow you the funds to buy your 4-5 bedroom house you have your eyes on?

If the 1 bedroom would rent for 750 euros a month would'nt that pay for the 1 bedroom apt's mortgage payment plus 2nd mortgage payment?

Bought my house 18 months ago. 22 years old at the time and it felt weird. All my friends were still at University or still wondering what to do with their lives and I was buying a house LOL

Glad I done it tho. Better than pissing my money up against a wall.

Bought my first house when I was 21 and have owned several homes since. Right now, I own my home. The only time I've rented is when I've known I wasn't going to stay in one place for more than 3 years, though I got nailed doing that once when the house I was renting almost doubled in value while I was there

I also have raw land I've invested in and have owned a few rental homes through the years.

Good for you, I know when my kids are just about to go into college I am going to make them work their asses off thinking that I am not going to pay for their college/university education and make them save. Just before they go into school I am going to take their savings and use it as a deposit to buy them a house to live in when they go to school. They will have to manage the building and make sure they get the rents in from their other renters.

This way it will teach them how to run a business and learn a little bit about real estate.

The guy who just bought my house told me the same thing.
His two daughters are gonna be the ones running the place and renting it out to their friends. Smart guy.

Awesome DH. If I ever have kids I always said from the minute they are born I'll be opening up trust funds for them and putting money into it weekly. Once they hit 18 they should have enough money for a house of their own.

Neither do I.

However. I do know this.

I plan on buying a rather large piece of land in a rural area, building a house and a few other things. What I am doing now is this. I plan to buy this house, the house next door and the 3 houses behind mine. They are all empty. They are all cheap, and I will own every house on the hill. Then I will rent them all out and use the profits to build the rest of my fortress.

If I plan on moving before the house is paid for, I will setup a sublet agreement and fix the place up a bit... rent it out for 2x what the payments are.

You gotta think long term man.

2nd mortgage? I don't have a mortgage at all. I own my place.
Also, I don't think the minimum payment for a mortgage is somewhat around ?1000/month (there's no such things as ?200,000 and under houses within 100km of Helsinki).

Almost everyone in Canada has a mortgage.

Nah, pretty much everyone in Finland is in debt too. I think most of the people in finland are dirt-poor and pay massive mortgages for the entire duration of their working lives, then they retire and die and then their kids sell the house and drink the money.

..but I'm not like most of Finland, thank god. I think I do things quite differently, I lack 'business sense' I think. I like to FIRST make the money, then buy the neat stuff. I have about $150 debt currently (my CC bill).

Homeownere here, this is the 3rd house I've owned. I bought my first house just a few months after I got out of the Army when I was 27. There really wasnt any point in buying a home while I was in the Army because they moved me around too much.

I own, but sometimes wish I did not. I stress all the freakin' time, wondering if there is some disaster waiting to happen in the walls or pipes that if I was only a handy dandy person I would know about, and be able to keep from happening.

I am totally incompetent about fixing stuff, so the idea of it all being someone else's worry is rather seductive at times.

Congrats to you, your friends are going to be envious in 5-10 years when you are that far ahead of them on the property ladder.

My wife and I are owners, we have a mortgage but I drastically shortened the term to jack the payments up. Thus saving shitloads in the long term plus only being affected by a couple of quid whenever theres an interest rate rise.

Rent

I'm 22 and not sure where I want to have a family and raise kids yet. I don't want to buy a home where I currently live (Florida) so I'm a renter until then. Also, I need to establish a line of credit (which I've yet to do...not bad credit just no credit lol) and then get my score up to at least 720 for a good mortgage.

We're renting (from my father) for the moment, but plan on building/buying soon. I am thinking some underground domes, some above ground geo-desic domes and cool "green" home stylings like built into a hill or something.

Yes, I like weird homes, but I also like to be somewhat hidden, and it would be an awesome place for kids to grow up!

We own a condo 4 bedrooms/3 baths, its very big in fact because the builder built them so large .It drove him into bankruptcy when they were built 20 yrs ago. Within 5 yrs want to buy a free standing house, dont like living by committee.

Own our house, I'm 24 and the wife is 21. Moved in last June and we are still getting things how we want it. Hopefully purchasing one of the lots next or behind our house in the next few weeks and then start on the landscaping. Damn new construction areas and all that dirt/dust. We gotta get some grass in this place lol.

as long as a house it's not entirely paid, I wouldn't call it owned.

This thread needs pics! I like to see all the big players mansions. I don't have any good pics of the outside of my house. Might have to take some tomorrow.
