Anybody own a VW GLI or GTI?

I just picked up a GLI for my wife and was wondering if anybody here has one? If so, have you added any mod's? I'm looking at chips to give it a little extra kick, but I was wondering if there was anything else I should be looking for?

P.S. Thanks for Bods4theMods for the recommendation. It's a better car than I thought, and pretty fun to drive.

I've had several GTI's, you can mod the living hell outta em. Chips got very involved and very expensive since the A4, but they're a cheap way to add some extra horsepower. Make sure you get a P-flow air intake if it doesn't already have one, and a new exhaust.

I bought my old lady one last year.

The only mod was to get rid of the shitty dealership tyres and get some Michelin Pilots. Now it actually handles...well for a VW anyway.

Funny that you say it's fun to drive, I don't like it at all and almost never drive it.

I have a GTI... there are tons of VW mods out there. Chipping them is harder that some cars (mostly because you really have to pull the engine controller out and get it reprogrammed, you can't just plug in a dongle to get performance).

Here is the most important thing you can know about a VW: It has about 150,000 bushing in the suspension, and each and every one of them will go one after another in a totally random sequence. The parts aren't expensive, but the time to keep getting after them is pretty high. Find a good VW mechanic, and put together a plan to replace the bushing en-mass when you start getting noise from any corner. The front swaybar bushings will go early and often, get use to it.

If it is a 1.8turbo, don't forget that the timing belt and water pump are both due for service at 100,000-140,000kms - a timing belt failure leads to expensive metal pieces wapping each other.

Generally very good cars, good fun, and fast for the price

Same here Mark.. I traded in the 5 series for it (an 8 banger), and am actually VERY impressed. It looked quick sitting there, so I gave it a shot...and getting rid of the BMW wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be. I still have the Z so it fills my need for speed, and the GLI is a nice ride for my wife.

Webgurl..No worries. VW's were pieces of shit back then. The only reason I considered it was because Car and Driver gave them a 90 overall on the road test review out of 100, plus I'd heard good things about these new models. They aren't what they used to be!

Alex,
great info! It is a 2.0 turbo as opposed to the 1.8.
I was looking at these:
http://www.goapr.com/VW/products/ecu...de_mkvgti.html

and I had my eye on:
http://myfastgti.com/vw/index.php/in...pic,676.0.html

I assume the GLI will be able to utilize the same technology as the GTI?

my contractor just bought the jetta deisel 2 days ago - $30K - $35K with tax.

new but a 2006 - the 07s didn't make enviromental testing. VW is hoping to have deiaels again in late 08

55mpg and deisel is cheaper then gas here too. it's actually cheaper than a hybrid to run and a pretty decent car.

I was actually looking at those as well, but I love the extra kick the GLI had. 0-60 in 6.7 is pretty solid for a stock car. The gas mileage was also better than my other cars (19mpg each) with this being at 25-34mpg.

The gas saving was tempting, but I wanted something fun when I get to drive it (when my wife lets me!). All in all, I love the car and for the price, it's unbeatable. Just 27k, and from what I hear the mods make this even more fun for under a couple g's.

The styling is more aggressive. Now if only I could get it to move even faster...
