![]() I can't believe this thread didn't get any play...
http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=744871 Must have been too technical for most WMs... I don't really know what you can do with a toolbar, but if you can trigger additional calls to the site in question, then there is NO way to stop this. Even so, if their toolbar auto-updates with a database, the lost traffic will still be significant. |

Definitely needs to be discussed, particularly with the latest revelation that the company listed in the WHOIS appears to have been involved with some shifty practices in the past.

unless someone comes up with a solution discussing this is nothing but whinning.
if you are designing a tradescript you should be working on a solution. |

Certainly, this is an important story, but its hard to discuss without sounding whiney.
Toolbars in general raise a lot of concerns in my opinion and I think that as more surfers get burned by these, they will learn to stay away. I guess that just takes time... Matt

It's not just about the toolbar thwarting tradescript tracking & redirecting... there are also questions about the ulterior motives of the company that released it. CoolWebSearch anyone?

hmm this only affects tgp's with unencrypted urls so simply encrypt the urls..

There's a thread on another board about this that suggests the toolbar catches the URL that is passed to the trade script (which is "in the clear"), so it would require that the thumb and trade scripts agree on encryption. The only other solution is integrating the thumb and trade script into one, so it's possible to use a proprietary value to indicate which gallery to send to... value in, URL out. The toolbar could probably still catch skimming by simply ignoring/blocking URLs such as http://www.domain.com/ or http://www.domain.com/tgp/

Do you know how to program a toolbar and what you can and can't do with them? I don't so can't say for sure... But IMO if you can monitor redirect urls (and change them or trigger addtional traffic script calls) in conjunction with their database, then there would be no way to stop this.
