Help with MPEG movies?

When I compile a movie using MPEG-1, I have problems viewing it from my server.

Specifically...the movie is about 250mb. It runs for about 16 minutes. When I click on the link to open the movie, the Windows Media Player shows the movie as only 6 minutes long. And...yeah...it only runs for about 6 minutes then quits.

I don't have the same problem when viewing the same movie in WMV format.

I can't be the only guy on the planet that has seen this problem. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?

Sounds like a codec problem with windows media, but then again, I have never rendered/played/encoded anything in Mpeg-1? Does it play correctly in any other players?

I have a guess. Assuming that you edited this video yourself, you might want to check if there is an error in the timeline like a minor gap in the video or audio track at the exact spot where it craps out playback on you in the MPEG version. Maybe the MPEG has problems, but WMP is able to play the video past the possible error in the WMV version.

It's a pain when that happens. What works for me sometimes is:

1. Use ATI Catalyst AVIVO to re-encode movie to mpeg.
2. Split the scene using Boilsoft.com splitter.
3. Create final mpeg fomat with videocharge.

it's an issue with your MPEG encoding app. The codec is not setup right. What app and what MPEG-1 settings? I would suggest not messing with the default MPEG-1 VCD setting to be safe.

Agreed,

I've seen this happen with certain versions of TMPGEnc. Seems to be something to do with the mpeg headers not being written properly. Dont know if it's a bug or badly written software or something else.

Canopus ProCoder or Sorensen Squeeze has always done the best jobs for me.

yup, listen to Jim. If there's a gap, MPEG will just cut off when it encounters that gap in the encoding. In the WMV, it encodes that gap as simply a black spot. Fast forward the WMV to the 6 minute mark and check.

The codec software I am using is Adobe Premiere Pro. Frankly, I hate all adobe products, but it seems to do okay. I am using the default settings, but am not coding it as VCD. Perhaps I should try this?

Thank you...I will check this out as well. It is certainly possible that there is a gap. I'm definitely NOT a pro when it comes to editing.

For a quick fix on mpeg streams, try using VideoRedo.
