I use that site network at least daily.

Hopefully it won't go to shit now.

Kinda figured something was up when they started using pop-over advertising a couple months ago... I was feeling all empowered because I wrote them an email, and the next day, they stopped using those ads.

You should also feel stupid because it was 100m for dictionary.com , thesaurus.com and reference.com combined not just dictionary.com.

Great deal for the seller and perfect timing I'd say...let's see how long the hype lasts. It's certainly an awesome package, but with an EBITDA of $2.9 million last year they better find more effective ways to monetize it.

In 2006, it (Lexico Publishing Group) generated revenues of $7 million, EBITDA of $2.9 million and net income of $2.8 million.

They got 14x yearly revenue. That's pretty damn good for an online business based on ad revenue.

Well, that network is one of the best resources around. Hopefully the new owners won't turn it to shit or start charging a subscription fee for the basic services.

Lol, "Dictionary.com sells for $100M." Not quite.

Answers.com "has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire Lexico Publishing Group, LLC", of which, some of their assets include Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and Reference.com. They're acquiring the company and their established businesses for $100M.

great for the domain industry, but a terrible price for this... based on the net income of the site alone answers.com just paid almost 40x yearly earnings.

Thats a pretty fucking huge bet that the Internet will remain in it's current shape and form for the next 40 years... plus a *huge* chunk of dictionary.com's traffic is paid not organic.

I'd be willing to bet my life's savings that the internet will not only maintain, it will grow beyond what you or I can imagine in the next 15 years. And a word on a .com as rudimentary as "dictionary" will not fall short.

In 20 years, we may have gotten away form any kind of .com, or the internet as we know it, but those domains will have served their purpose well for the new owners.

I believe that within 20 years the Web will be navigated using only Semaphore. I just started studying it so that I can keep ahead of everyone else.

14x is good - but I suspect the new owners see ways to match up the sites with things that they have going on to increase the overall revenue. That is the key to a deal like this, the feeling and the plan to make more than the site(s) currently make when you buy them.

As others have said, hopefully any changes made to the sites won't take away the utility and make them worthless. I use it all the time when playing scrabble (nice to have a laptop to settle disputes!)

If the development of technology continues as it did in the past 50 years, it will take MUCH LESS than 20 years for things to change DRASTICLY around here.

The computing power we will have in 10 years alone will be INSANE by today's standards.
