Why do "old timers" feel so elite?

Yes, because you're 10-20 years older than some of the younger folk you really RAWK!

Personally I feel the opposite. It's 100 times harder to start a program and make serious bank now than it was 10 years ago. Back then, any idiot could make money ;)

Some of the new programs have niches, content and features that are awesome while some of the old timers are just doing things the "old way" and happy to get whatever scraps they still can.

Of all the major program owners I dealt with in the beginning, I can only think of a handful that are even still hands on with their programs. Most are enjoying mainstream income/playing/retired while paying someone else to run the adult stuff.

only 75%? i guess hes going to have to try harder.

the reason is they actually dont feel elite at all, they actually feel inferior to people now a days. so they stick to talking about how elite they were back in the day.

do you remember on the movie billy madison when he went back to high school and everyone thought he was a total douchbag and he would talk about how he used to be so cool years ago? same thing here.

I dont think i would even want to talk about it. Like i have said in the past, if you are bragging about being in this industry since 87, 95, the summer of 98 and you dont completely own the niche you are in, then maybee you should not brag about it.

What I see is most 'old timers' know business, and what it takes to make one successful. Many younger generations have learned skills, and grasp what it takes, but dont have the experience or business sense to make it all work. Especially when you have 5-30 employees depending on you to pay their rent and feed their kids and provide their health insurance plans.

I don't think it's a feeling of being "elite" but yeah, it does kind of apply.

Folks who have been in the industry only a few years know nothing of the struggles that webmasters who have been around for a long time had to endure.

There were no link dumps, tgp's or cj sites. If you wanted to trade links with another webmaster you had to surf the counters and find a webmaster who had traffic within your traffic structure and email them. Response rate was around 1 in 5. I remember vividly setting up links on a new website and submitting it to Persian Kitty. I'd send the traffic through the link 1 way to them and the following week when the "new" button came off my link on PK, they'd then send me the return traffic so I could maintain a traffic flow. Then doing the same thing again for links on the Green Guy or Richards Realm. It was a constant juggling act and one today's webmaster doesn't have to put up with.

A lot of the traffic was paid banner spots (flat rate for the month) and there weren't anywhere near the number of programs to choose from. It was a buyers market like you wouldn't believe and just because you wanted to promote a certain program - didn't mean you got to. Today it's a seller's market and you can pick and choose at your leisure.

There was no rev share and promotional material was limited to a banner or movie and if you wanted to make your own promo material, you had to get a user/pass and go hunting for it. Now, you log into your account and get your balls massaged while choosing how you want your promo material delivered to you. Hell, some programs will even do the work and set it up for you, provide you a domain AND a server.

Newer webmasters walk in and enjoy an incredible buffet of food to choose from. The table and chairs have all been set up and all they have to do is eat.

And while you don't have to come over and stuff a $20 in my pocket, it doesn't hurt to recognize the folks who did all the cooking and prep work for the bounty you're receiving

some do, some don't.
Usually those that are elite, don't feel like it, or at least they don't shove it in your face.

Kid commented to me once, he said why do you think you are so smart, you came up in a time when there was no color TV, no Jet airliners, no compact disks, no personal computers, no cell phones, no ipods, no DVD, no gps....

I said son...who do you think INVENTED all that stuff? Now what are YOU gonna do with your life.

For one thing, aside from being older and more exerienced in life and business, many of the older ones have the sense to remain open and willing to learn from the younger set.

Too bad so many of the younger set lacks that same sense to learn from the older ones.

Nah, if you have been around 10 years and have done well, by all means, feel great about it. If you have been around 10 years and the only thing you can really say is "I've been around 10 years", is that really something to be bragging about?

Your analogy might be correct if all the food was already eaten from the buffent when the newer webmasters arrive. You can have all the promo tools in the world but they are worthless when fewer people are buying than ever before and more people are trying to sell than ever before. You think its easy starting from step 1 today? Give me a break. It was very easy when i started in 98, as a result i was lazy and didn't work for months at a time and as a result, i don't "own the niche i was in". But hey, i was only 20 and never thought the gravy train would slowly come to a crawl.

I agree. Some of us werent able to be "of age" when the internet came out. So the older guys got a big head start because they weren't doing homework in gradeschool. Now the market is flooded and you need to be super creative and skilled to even get into this.

I think a sense of eliteness comes about from watching your competitors come and go.
The young guys always want to chirp about how easy it used to be.
really? Well what happened to the tens of thousands of others, no longer here, who started when I did? You know, when it was so easy.

What are they doing in mainstream? What are they selling? Are they operating mainstream affiliate programs?

Why do "new timers" get upset when "old timers" think they are elite? Let them feel good...it's nice to be kind to old people..

Some folks may feel elite - who cares? But doubt it is generally a feeling of being elite.

There are "old timers" who literally made this industry - some are well-known, others not generally known. They fought court battles and struggles before the net was a gleam in Tim Lee's eye. They initiated the concept of adult stores, around which a whole industry developed - from manufacturing in Asia, video production to print media. They all ran "real world" businesses and employed many people - and a fair number of these business are now quoted on various stock exchanges, tho probably more are still privately owned.

The internet is simply another 'store front' for the adult industry and started about a decade ago. It's hard to compare people who have been managing companies in the adult industry for, sometimes 40 years or more and who have went thru various legal battles - and survived.

When the net is only around 10 years old, it's hard to see there are any "old timers" in the online adult industry apart from those who existed prior to that time.

If anything, there is a blatant difference in the way business is done. There are plenty good "noobs" (we are all "noobs" when it comes to the net) with a clue, but far more clearly lack any business accumen and who would have no hope in hell of either raising finance or running a bricks and mortar business.

Maybe that is the difference between the "elite" and "non elite"??

That's not an "old timer" Scotty - that is a crook
