Electric car owner spent night in jail, charged with stealing 5 cents of electricity

Really, Georgia?

(This happened last year, but still...)

Why can't we just get along?
Kaveh Kamooneh committed the crime of plugging in Nissan LEAF electric car into an electrical outlet outside of Chamblee Middle School, waiting for his 11-year-old to finish playing tennis (or, according to the police's version, he was playing tennis himself). The school immediately dialed 911 to reach the cops - rather than talk to Mr. Kamooneh - and within minutes an officer was there, writing charges for theft of electricity. Back-of-the-envelope math puts the amount stolen at about 5 cents... The police report was filed and 11 days later, two deputies showed up at his house and arrested him.

Records show Kamooneh spent more than 15 hours in the DeKalb County Jail for plugging his electric car into the school's electrical outlet.

So... according to this if you have ever plugged in your phone charger to an outlet at a public facility, airport or a private business you are a thief?

The specific purpose of electric charging stations is to allow people to plug their electric cars. That's the entire reason they were designed in the firtst place

The specific purpose of automotive gas tanks is to power the auto. It wasn't designed for the purpose of siphoning out gas, eventhough some people may do that.

This doesnt sound like an electric charging station. Sounds like he ran a cord to a plain old electrical outlet. You ok with your neighbour running an extension cord to your house to run his christmas lights?

it's more like your neighbor plugging his cell into your outdoor plug for 5 mins.. They said it was 5 cents of electricity. Would you call 911 if you saw a teenager plugging his iphone into your outdoor plug or would you go up and tell them to get his shit and get out of here?

Oh ok if that was the case then the action was just a bit more onerous. I thought he was using a electric car charging station. I would not be ok if some stranger just used an outdoor electric plug on my house to charge up his car.

Although I thought most electric cars use 220 volt outlets which is kinda rare to find outdoor buildings compared to 110v outlets.

The Nissan comes with a 110 volt charger standard and you can get the other one as an option.

Yea I think its a bit worse if the guy was just using a random plug he found to charge up his car. But the response was way over the top for the small amount he actually stole.

The only reason I call the police is if I need a report from them for the insurance company. They serve no other purpose around here.

Obviously the sensible thing to do would have been to unplug it and tell the guy to fuck off.

It said something about the guy playing tennis or waiting for his kid to finish playing tennis though, so who knows how long he planned on leaving it plugged in. They take hours to charge.

You can go to jail in a Camaro from speeding/wreckless driving.
You can go to jail in a Volt only from stealing electricity.
Having second thoughts yet?

who said it was 5 cents?

"On average, it will be less than $1 to charge a plug-in hybrid and $2-$4 for an all-electric car"

http://www.pluginamerica.org/faq/gen...estion#t39n102

so he could have in theory stolen $4 worth of electricity that one time? and who says this is his first time? For all we know his daughter plays there every week, and he was charging his car every week there for months...

That's stealing. As electric cars grow they are going to have figure something out or a smart gas station offer quick charge for so much.

Also Nimrod could of asked the school I bet he would of got a sure ok. I can see were people don't think.we have been around a just plugging in is ok. I was thought it was strange people felt it was OK to plug in their laptop somewhere without asking

"The school immediately dialed 911 to reach the cops"

appalling, sickening behavior. Reading news it seems that so much people call the cops for anything, try solving petty shit like this yourself for once you fucking degenerates.

so lets say you come home from work, and some douchebag is plugged into an outlet outside your house and charging his electric car... how would you handle that? "Hey buddy, don't do that again"?

school is no house, public place, people were already there to see it, his daughter was there, etc. Completely different on all levels compared to your scenario.

Here are the instructions.
- The weirdo who called the cops should've stepped outside instead
- Unplug it
- Tell him he can't use the socket for that.
It's amazing how talking to someone can solve things.

Instead paranoid freaks call cops for everything.

911: What's your emergency?

School: There is a guy in our parking lot and it's looks like he plugged his car into one of our outside electric plugs.

911: Ok, What's your emergency?
