Paysite owners & security techs, a question please.

What is a decent (can be very basic as long as I can censor given words or combo's) members area forum script, that is also secure enough to not compromise my site or server (for the most part as nothing is 100% protected)?

Hopefully something that is not to expensive.
Does not need to be working with any given CMS (yes im doing one site the manual way).
Threaded if possible.
Really do not want attachment possibilities or at least let me toggle them off.
Can even be some wierd use for another program/script.

Thanks.

Well it is a weekend I did not expect much, yet at least a bump would of been nice.

There are many options, of which the most poplar would be phpBB2, which is a security nightmare of it's own accord, or SMF, which is pretty damn nice.

Although it's had problems in the past, if you're not adverse to writing a few lines of PHP code yourself, MyLittleForum did have one or two security issues, which is easy to repair (make $lang a global define(LANG,eng); and do a global replace), and the v2 beta. It is a capable system, and it has a 'bad word list' filter as well as a few other plugins. This one will require a little bit of work, though, and v1.7 is NOT Smarty enabled so you will need to write subroutines to do things such as displaying banners.

vbulletin is around 100 a year. yabb is free but uses cgi, SMF is simple and can get you going very easily (haha website jargon), or you can wait for the new release of PHPBB3 which is support to be filled with bells and whistles and is 0$ cost.

Just make sure you plug our program on it :P lol.

What is about the standard rate for doing a complete redesign/skin or vbulletin?

Hell I just really want an effecient, secure, and easy way to talk with members while preventing spam.

Get a custom board script. That way you can ingrate it so their member username works with the forum (possible option would be choose display names) if you really want something basic and secure (posting, thread starting, quoting, replies) and not much else then its a cost effect route to take plus you know exactly whats in it and whats not. Forums are a simple thing its all the bells and whistles that make them complex.

Everything on the market is so over the top with crap that there isn't a solid suggestion. The basic ones are so outdated and perl based. www.hotscripts.com still indexes a few of the cgi/perl basic ones and a few(very few) basic php ones.

Spend a few bucks on vBulletin, as a general rule (if you want a very secure script) try to not use any script that requires to chmod 777 lots of folders, turn register_globals on, safe_mode off, enable php functions as shell_exec, etc

I did not ask for site security and already have strongbox and have been using it for years. Thanks for promoting it though.

Well want it to match my site naturally. Allow users to have a different user/pass as my paysite ones are very long random assigned and that would suck. Would like to censor whatever words I desire. Make sure there are no avatars, keep html, flash, so forth off the site. Keep security strong. Maybe add in some ads (not sure), swap up the navigation some so going between the site and forum is pretty seemless without making strongbox to cranky. Turn off as much crap that could bog down a box as possible.

I am sure I maybe could come up with a little more but really do not need a whole bunch of punch to talk to the users and ask about updates, things they want, models they may want to see in the future, so forth.

IMHO, Vbulletin is what you're looking for. It's cheap, secure, easy to customize, and scales down just as well as it scales up.
