Mainstream question. Mini sites vs blog posts which is better?

Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about, a mini-site is a site less than 20 pages deep that focuses on a long tail keyword.

I have a blog that focuses on a niche, however there are some micro niches within that niche, and I have found some pretty decent long tail keywords for those micro niches that I should be able to exploit.

What I am trying to figure out is if I should just use those long tail keywords as a post title, or create min-sites around them.

For example.

Blog - niche.com/long-tail-keyword/ that would be the post page url.
Or

long-tail-keyword.niche.com

Then drive traffic via links from the blog to those sub domain mini sites.

Which do you think would be better in your opinion?

Should be the same if the title keywords and page text is similar.

Okay, so there should be no real problem with dropping rank quicker as a sub-domain vs a blog that continuously gets spidered?

While it is a micro niche of the niche I'm targeting, it's not big enough to blog about daily...so basically 3 articles tops and leave it there to do it's work over the year...whether that means it brings in $1.00 a day or more.

You have the main niche as the blog?

Yes...so I'm trying to figure out if I should do the micro-niches as posts on the main blog vs mini-sites around those micro-niches that the blog links to in a post.

Mini sites with say 5ish pages targeting long tail phrases on various "platforms" does work well for me.

If you'd like to attract social media traffic to complement your SE traffic, I'd go with blogs. A large part of whether this will work depends on your content.
