SEO people... a little food for thought...
So I sit here and dabble and wonder...
Im dealing with CSS and making things relevant without making them standout... such as the strong tag or italic tag or h1 any emphasizing tag so say I use them but I alter them... nothing too drastic, just maybe a notch down or whatever right? so, my questions and food for thought is this... do spiders react to modified CSS relevance... AND .... if they do... would it be beneficial to the sites relevance to issue the css from a css file or do spiders crawl css files as well... so...DOes google/yahoo hate the miniscule tampering of emph. tags (again nothing drastic) and if so, does putting the setting in a css file let the spider read the "layout" as is?

imo... sometimes its good to change the css in your pages, especially when you can target better keywords/phrases and want to better exploit them to the spiders/crawlers. I's actually working on a project that takes the same pages and duplicates them automatically changing key text upon generation and css upon regeneration.

no, however they do pay attention to the style applied to key text/phrases deeming them more important and more relevant than the rest of the textual content on the page ;)

Messing with CSS used to be a trick that was used successfully, but it has been a couple years, and they have probably figured that out by now.

Best you can do is layout your site so that it's easy for people read. I wouldn't go tweaking anything just to entice Google. Lay it out with clear headings, body, subheadings, ordered lists, and unordered lists -- all when they are called for by the text itself. In other words, format your pages like a professional writer would. Make your pages for people, Google will follow.

tags you use on words help. h1 tags, your anchor text is huge. But still links into the page is still the name of the game.

boosting relevance is the name of the game... I know the normal configuring madness... but what im wondering is if spiders notice css and modifying those relevance tags... actually i think i already know that answer, i believe they do.... so thats my question... would it be more beneficial to have the CSS settings in a seperate css file instead of being in the header of the html file.... I know its more beneficial if you have mass pages with the same settings... but if I do not then header is fine... do spiders read css files too... I guess none of you truly know this answer...lets ask bob

![]() Search engines do not penalize you for it, even if they have figured out what you're doing. The worst that could possibly happen is that the benefit be negated within their algorithms, and your efforts will have been a waste. But no it will not hurt your rankings. I watched an SEO video that suggested this very thing as a way to help, although they did stress that the increase is SLIGHT.
But for example, my anchor text color is a VERY close shade to my regular text color, except the hover and visited properties. I COULD make it the same color. This looks like regular text and I highlight certain key phrases linking back to myself. The surfer does not see the link unless they mouse over it. This isn't cloaking, because google and the surfer see the same exact thing. The difference is that google and the surfer are looking for different things.

Sure it might have a tiny, miniscule amount of impact.. but, there are other things that a far huger influence on your rankings.. primarily high quality trusted incoming links and fuckloads of them. Have that, and you could have a picture of goatse on your page without the keyword anywhere to be seen, and you'll rank.

contrary to a few posters - spiders DO check for "font-size" and whatnot.
but a few rules of thumb: if you're not making something obscure you're probably ok. They tend to check if you are making something invisible or obscured. css is a valid thing and they won't dock you for using it. secondly, i'd be pretty suprised to hear that a spider will pull an external stylesheet from the server, examine it, and look at how it applies to a page. i could be wrong, but i would be surprised. |

in anycase, regarding backlinks... it's old news that you need A,B,C links not A,B links.
I just have some stuff stored in my brain that I have heard from SEO fiends over the past decade. Mainly I just don't care enough about SEO, but have a few "good practices" embedded in my subconscious (not that i follow all of them all the time)... 1. Have pages that are focused on a topic. 2. name your files descriptively 3. avoid excessive forwarding and redirects, even for legit reasons My best S.E. pages always turn out to be model profiles. They are all dynamic, and on top of that it's not like i'm even trying to tweak them for SEO. It just happens naturally that the page is focused on a particular woman - her name reappears consistantly on the page in various contexts along with several dozen other potentially important keyword combinations. AND model names are something surfers search on all the time. Works great. For me at least, or should i say, "in my scale" - i'm no ben franklin ;) |

Well I have to say I kind of interest me about this and attended a couple of seminars / discussions.
On the new site, basically I want to have every page of the tour focused on a different key thing to point out so hope it will bring results.
