Anyone ever been in a hurricane before?

this bastid Hugo hit us with 100+ mph winds and spawned many tornados. Im here in Charlotte NC too which is well inland for anything really big to hit, but still we got the crap knocked outta us in 1989

I was 8 or 9 when that happened, i remember hiding down in the downstairs bathroom for like an hour, then the eye passed us and we walked outside, very calm no wind, trees down everywhere, bout 10mins later the winds starting picking up again so we went back inside, then wham 100mph winds again, it was crazy

Not I.
Here in Kanata we just feel the winds from far away, but they never normally hit us. Did hugo really take that path? Wow. Hurricanes are crazy... they look wicked from space, though.

Saw this question in two places today so ...

Haven't been near the center of a major one. Was in Belle in New England as a child. Was in Orlando when David went up the eastern seaboard of Florida in 1979. Was in a tropical storm in Cocoa Beach many years ago and right near the center of borderline tropical storm/hurricane Gabrielle last year.

Most of those were good for a school cancellation, a few day's power outtage, and a few small trees knocked down at most.

I have been through a hell of a blizzard though. 43 inches of snow from one storm. 175 inches of snow that year. Syracuse, NY. 1993.

Was 20 miles from the eye of Hurricane Andrew... A very interesting 6 hours of my life... However, the worst part about that hurricane was the misery that followed. South Miami was a hell hole for about a month. Plus no power or water for at least a week...

Hurriance Jerry 1995, I was there on the coast of the OuterBanks of North Carolina on a camping trip in my tent on the beach front camping....We drove in from philly a few days before, My dad was like, oh, its just a bit of rain, LOL....

We stayed there for about 24 hours on the beach campground before we bounced to Virginia to hang out in the cabin we rented.

Nothing like the fury of nature. Really beautiful at times

I was stuck in the White Horse Pub in St. Georges, Bermuda, as one missed the island by about 100 miles. That is as close as I have ever come, and as close as I ever wanna get. Nasty, scary shit. Of course, I had to ride TO the bar from the base in some pretty nasty weather on a friggin moped, but I figured the pub was safe, and a tour group of 14 Canadian nurses didn't hurt any. THAT part I would do again ...

I flew into Los Cabos 3 days after one hit and flew out several hours before the next one hit, Probably as close as you can come without actually being in one.

Grew up in new Orleans have been through many and seen lots of destruction from them. Matter of fact, my mom called me yesterday to let me know everything was cool as the one that just passed Isidore, didnt do any damage. I saw pics of people boarding up their homes on a website and didnt even know there was one! Had to call.

As for historical, I was locked on "Grand Isle" a small island like piece of land about 4 miles long and 2 miles wide during a hurricane. We were there for 3 weeks, I was 11. I used to spend summers there. The island was under 4 feet of water. My uncle was in charge of the Fire Department rescue so we had some fun, but it was horrible to see everything lost. I am certain others have worst stories, but at that age everything seemed so much grander.

Also used to go down there as a kid for the "Tarpon Rodeo" to fish tournament for biggest Tarpons.

Now the shores are lined with huge rocks. I mean big rocks. Like bigger than cars, they keep the shores from getting beat to nothing. As it is the shoreline used to be a good 50 feet from the street parking area for the beach, not anymore, there is no beach.

Havent been there since I was 19, so its been awhile, wonder what it looks like now.

I'd rather be in a hurricane! I was in an earthquake once several years ago... and it's a lot scarier.
