Foreign FOOD Favorites - What's Yours?

So I'm watching Anthony Bourdain (Food Network) chow down on a "Curry Wurst mit Pommes" (sausage with curry ketchup sauce, and french fries" while he's filming for his show in Germany and it reminded me of some of the good stuff I fattened up on while living in Germany.

I miss Currywurst, Hanuta, Leberkaese, Weisswurst with sweet mustard, and Doner Kebab the most.

I know many of you travel a lot or have lived overseas so what are your favorite foreign foods?

currywurst with fries

Hanuta

I love Anthony Bourdaine's show! I also like the other guy's show, Exotic Foods. I forget his name now, the short chubby guy. I watch those shows whenever I can.

I think his name is andrew zimmerman or something close to that. Do not care for his show but I do like Bourdaines.

Yeah, that's him. Why don't you like it? I've heard a lot of people say that they don't, but I think the guy knows his stuff and probably has better taste than Bourdaine.

Cause I see him more out for almost a fear factor response, just pure shock value. Did however catch the show they did together. Bourdaine is more looking for foods that make a place, typically starting with the lower classes.

It would be the same if someone wanted to go to Spain and just hit the most cutting edge chefs, dealing with the lastest trends. (which by the way is vegetables, go figure. Ok ya they going wacky like special waters for each veggie type etc).

I like how Bourdain is always cool and groovy, smoking cigarettes, enjoying a drink or two, letting out the occasional expletive, and doesn't try to be overly TV-friendly/PC, ...but all without being the stereotypical obnoxious tourist-y douche.
He enjoys sea food way too much though, unfortunately LOL

I think he quit smoking by the way. Though his alcohol consumption and cursing seems to be in check.

When you say Japanese, does that include the grill items as well as the um hot pot style stuff too (hot soup things you cook your own meats in), or do you mean mostly sushi.

I want to try a real curry wurst. We had one last year in London and it was actually pretty good but I bet it is better in Germany.

In the UK, I miss Gryos. While Doner kebabs are all over the place here they are close but exactly like a gyro.

Thai.. Japanese... and Chinese Yum Cha/Dim Sum.. Indian..
Australian Fusion is a bit of a cop out...generally means lots of seafood and not really forgoing many tastes..
It's a bit hard for me to say something like italian or mexican because they're probably a little more integrated into the western diet and a little easier to cook and not as much of a "special" thing. I mean I can whip up an awesome goats cheese and pinenut fettucini in about 10 minutes flat... and spaghetti/pizza/tacos are things that you've grown up with. Not that thats all it is.. but you've got to go to a pretty spectacular italian place to make it worthwhile in my opinion otherwise I'd just make it myself.. Spanish is ok.. I guess I'm judging things a little by their relative exposure(not that thai/chinese resturants haven't been on every corner for 30 years ;) )/cooking difficulty here... but so be it. I like exploring food.. I just spent two weeks trying to procure and ordering in karasumi which is dried and salted mullet moe which I used for coating and searing sashimi tuna as there was none in a 200mile radius.. Then again karasumi is just japanese for bottarga in italy.. and pizza is pretty awesome when it's homemade....

I like it all! sushi, japanese, chinese, dim sum, korean ( getting started with it ), mexican, middle eastern, greek, italian, spanish, jewish, peruvian, indian, french, russian, thai - there are yet lots of things I haven´t tried, such as brazilian, caribbean, colombian, real german stuff, african, vietnamese, and a few others. I believe the question was about stuff you tried in situ while travelling and you miss the most, and I would say - funny as it will sound for lots of ppl over here - american breakfast!
