Sun Microsystems buys MySQL for $1 billion!

http://www.rttnews.com/sp/todaystop.asp?item=37

"Under the terms of the deal, Sun will pay about $800 million in cash in exchange for all MySQL stock and assume approximately $200 million in options."

That's huge!

I wish I had $800 million in cash. I would probably do bad with it though.

Not sure I like the sound of that....

I have to admit I thought MySQL was GPL.

And they will make back their $1 Billion investment how?

Seriously though, they obviously have some integration plan with other Sun products or will offer a support package to corporations with large installations - something that would cut into the "enterprise" DB market. I don't follow that market (I have a life) but I'd imagine they could do serious damage.

Yeah, it seems to be more about making themselves stronger than recouping profits directly out of MySQL itself.

I got a chuckle when I read that. It's funny on how so many people mistaken the two.

Sun rocks

MySQL already performs best on Solaris anyways...this will probably lead to even more enhancements and performance for future issues.

Its actually smart and yes it will stay free.

The idea is that people use the free software, they learn it, they understand it and when they go to a company that needs enterprise software they want to use what they know. You think I'm full of it simply look at the history of UNIX

They are buying the company that provides enterprise support for MySQL. I'm sure it will still be open. Sun has a good history with open stuff. They are probably just trying to gain more market share in the enterprise marketplace. Makes sense. Wish there was better MySQL support when I was using Java. Don't really use it anymore.

Thats about what I was thinking - That its the support packages that Sun will make money from.....

The problem I think is where it will leave development?
