Susan Eisenhower, `Lifelong Republican,' Backs Obama

Susan Eisenhower, `Lifelong Republican,' Backs Obama (Update1)

By Ryan J. Donmoyer

Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The granddaughter of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, saying the Illinois senator can forge bipartisan cooperation and ``encourage ordinary Americans to stand straight again.''

Susan Eisenhower, writing on the Washington Post opinion pages today, said Obama is best positioned to ``bring about a sense of national unity and change'' and can attract the crossover voters from the Republican Party to make it happen. It was Obama's first endorsement by a prominent Republican.

``If the Democratic Party chooses Obama as its candidate, this lifelong Republican will work to get him elected and encourage him to seek strategic solutions to meet America's greatest challenges,'' wrote Eisenhower, 57, an author and business consultant. ``To be successful, our president will need bipartisan help.''

Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, was elected president in 1952, the last contest that didn't feature an incumbent president or vice president. Susan Eisenhower wrote that a coalition of Democrats, Republicans and young voters can deliver Obama a victory that would ``assure the world and Americans that this great nation's impulses are still free, open, fair, and broad-minded.''

I see a pattern emerging that makes me think at least certain aspects of the Republican machine is pushing for Obama to get on the ticket.

I wonder about that.

Bipartisanship, run-of-the-mill mud-slinging (as the mud's already started flying in ads against Hillary), or strategy?

Get Obama the nomination and insure a Republican victory. Not much to figure out IMHO.

If Obama gets the nomination,, all the die hard repubs in the world couldnt stop his movement

He will pull swaths of voters from republicans, democrats and ayone in between

I think it would be a landslide victory IMHO

I believe that the repubs who support him are of the free mind type who at the end of the day want to do what is best for america

I have no doubt that's it in some cases - perhaps this one is one of those... but I'm not just talking about this case. What got me thinking about it was Romney's latest ad that trashes Hill-Dog... the entire ad is geared toward debasing her... right before Super Tuesday...

So, the Republic long-shot whose already loaned his own campaign nearly 20 million out of his own pocket is buying ad time in California not really promoting his own campaign, but instead trashing one of the 2 Democratic hopefuls before the Primary election...

And then I think back to other things that have happened over the last couple months...

makes me wonder.

Yeah. That's what I'm thinking.

And, if so - I hope they're biting off more than they can chew. The more I examine my choices, the closer I get to accepting that I'll be punching a hole next to Obama's name on Tuesday.

The reason for Romneys ad's are simple

No single couple can divide and polarize like the clintons can, by attacking hilary romney energizes the republican base... and he really needs to

here is why obama will win taken from another website

I live in Vermont. This state is known for its progressiveness but, like every state, we definitely have our hardcore conservative Republican constituency. Today, I was at the video store in my very rural town and I overheard a man and a woman, other customers, loudly talking about politics. It was one of those out-loud conversations that inevitably involves everyone else in a 30 foot radius. Here's what I gathered:

They're both ok with McCain, although not very excited, but they really love his support for the Iraq War. As they browsed the movies, one of them added that he didn't like William H. Macy, the actor, because he heard he was against the war.

They are as anti-Clinton as you might imagine. The thing they agreed about most passionately was that they would never vote for her. One stated - and the other strongly agreed - that if Clinton wins "we're screwed".

And then their tone changed.
It was as if they stopped talking about politics, all partisan edge dissipated, and started to talk about a party at the neighbor's house. The woman then offered up "... but I like Obama. I don't know, I'm a conservative Republican, but I might vote for him". The guy totally agreed.

Andrew, it wasn't just the fact that these 2 pro-war self identified conservative Republicans were considering voting for the Democrat. It was that the thought of Obama, and consideration of his candidacy, caused them to lose the typical rules, assumptions, and partisan demeanor... like a giant exhale.

It's why he's going to win.

Since my choices have been limited I will probably skip that part of the ballot.
