![]() OK, Got my hands on a big dell box I want to use as a server in my house for movies and music an shit. From the looks of it, it has four processors, four 160gig hardrives, and here's the catch...it has windows server 2003 standard edition, and I don't have the admin password!!! The guy who gave it to me can't remember it.
I should also add it has no USB ports or cdrom drive (just old fashion 3.5), nor can I find the fucking plug for the ribbon to put a cd rom in the damn thing in the first place...(like a nut, I was going to just throw linux on it and call it a day, then realized I should try to get in and see whats there first, plus with the separate controller for the four drives, i'm not sure i won't be over my head a little) Any ideas? I think it'll make a great library server. How the fuck do I get that passsword? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS for those of you who miss me...and I know there are a lot of you (juicy!). I haven't been around in months, because I'm on a big mainstream project...I'll be back soon. [wink] |

Do you have a floppy drive? Put one of the hard drives into a computer with a cd rom drive and put the files on the hd from the dell box to do a hard drive install, boot w/ a bootdisk and you should be golden.

What do you mean by "Admin" password?
BIOS, or OS? If it's OS, just flip out the hd into another box, and reformat it. If it's BIOS, consult with the motherboard manufacturer.

That won't preserve the existing OS. If I bought a computer and it came with something I didn't have I'd probably want to play around with it first.
![]() Another option is to put the drive into an NT/XP/Vista machine, if the contents themselves are not encrypted then you can probably poke around that way? You won't be able to boot 2k3 server of course... |

well I don't know anything about windows server 2003, but I do know that in XP if you don't know the password you can restart in safe mode and change the password. Not sure if that woud work in your case.

Some of the older versions of windows had a nice little trick you can try...
Theres 2 diff ways to do the 'trick' (A) (1) Start the computer as you normally would (2) When the login screen appears hit the Escape [ESC] key (B) (1) Start the computer as you normally would (2) When the login screen appears just hit the Enter key (A) Worked on NT, 98, ME and 2000 dunno about the server versions, I know the flaw was fixed by the release of XP -Loki-

Use the factory reset disk and start over.
Why risk some cp being on it anyway.

Burn this live CD to a disk and pop it, boot up, and follow the instructions.
