Wedding Registries are an insult

who the fuck came up with this idea? These registries are so emotionless, so what's the point of buying a gift for someone if they're picking it?

I personally believe in the saying "you never look a gift horse in the mouth" because when someone gives you a gift from the heart, it shouldn't matter what they give. It's the act of giving that counts.

It is huge income for the stores offering it. Personally, I can't even tell my kids what I want for Christmas, I would have a problem putting out a wish list.

i understand the money part, but it's a shame that the couple having the wedding don't consider the guests wishes. I believe if you're going to have a wedding with guests, that they shouldn't be inconvenienced with it.

you're like me, when my birthday comes around or even other occasions, i just tell people they don't need to buy me anything at all.

The problem with letting guests choose gifts is that you end up with 5 toasters and 2 wine racks.

another problem with gift registry's which is even worse then asking for what you want is the way some are setup. Not only can you go to some places and setup a gift list but you can check and see if anyone bought something off that list as some mark it off as they are purchased etc.

A friends son was getting married and he set up a gift registry from Target. The kid was always a bit of a wise ass and this was actually pretty cool. Everyone made good natured fun, the list was very practical, both sides had big bucks and this was a nice way really of saying just come and have a good time.

I got them his & hers rubber flip-flops (shower shoes), lol .......

Weddings are big business! The marriage and divorce industry make this country billions of dollars. People get married for the dumbest reasons sometimes too. Just because they want one of those stupid registries probably.

the last wedding me and my girlfriend went to had a registry at target as well, we got them the dish set they had wanted then stuck a big box of condoms inside the box to kind of personalize the gift so they would remember who it was from lol (they are young but kinda proper)

Yeah, its pretty ghey. You know what else is ghey? When you fly to the other side of the country for a friend's wedding, pay for your hotel and stay, and they still expect another gift.

Cash is a good idea, wish we'd thought of that.

When one of my friends got married they asked for cash and said it would be anonymous, so we get there with our anonymous envelope and the guy asks us to write our names on it. Turns out everyone else did so even if we'd left it anon they would have figured it out.

I dunno... I see 'em as a convenience.

You know what you're getting is something they want, and you know that you're the only one (on paper, at least) getting them what you're getting them. You don't have to worry about gift receipts, and when you go over to their place a year later to chill for an evening, you know they'll actually be using what you got them.

You don't _have_ to buy for them from the registry... nor do they expect to get everything that they put on it.

You coulda cut out, and not gone if cost was an issue, right?

But on the subject of cost, your friend probably had to put up somewhere between $100 and $250 extra to get you seated at his/her wedding and reception.

i can't stand that shit either. At my wedding i had people come from Switzerland and a few from the Mid West, I didn't expect them to even give a gift because i was so happy just for the fact that they came.

That's funny. I had a friend do exactly the same thing. The list had absolutely nothing expensive on it. There was shit like Bic ink pens, Spiderman cereal, 6-pack of Dr. Pepper, popcorn, etc. They just wanted people to show up and get drunk with them at the reception.

That is the upside . . . so you don't end up with 5 toasters.
