I've done it plenty of times. Sometimes it does seem a bit slower than working directly off the computer's main hard drive, but not too bad.

It is all about speed baby. I do edit from a external drive if, A) it is firewire 800 and B) the file is not that large.
and Never with HD footage
It works far better on my internal sata drive.
But I know some people who do it regardless and then complain that everything is slow and looks choppy.
Just my .02

What NosMo said ......... My main hd has applications only on it, I always transfer from remote hd's to a second internal drive for editing, so much faster also if that drive is empty except for current project.

the person told me they had burnt up drives by doing it directly from the external vs. copying it onto an internal. I am using .avi files up to 10gb in size.

as a rule of thumb I always keep my work files on internal drives and export to externals .. works faster, less lag time and sometimes I have recieved errors using usb 2.0 transfers . If using 800 firewire .. no worries

All my source hdv footage is on external drives, with firewire connections connecting them to the computer and I edit everything in Premiere Pro CS3. Works fine.
