Dog people ......

When can you say a dog is house broken? Zango hasn't had an accident in 6 weeks, before that it was 3 weeks. (she pooped in the house) So is it safe to say she's house broken? I hope so, I didn't realize having a dog was so much work. She 5 months old now and is doing well with the 2 cat's.

Work? :D

Seriously, I'm not saying this is you but so many people out there envision this cute little animal that automatically just lays around looking cute and already knows after a few days how to ask to go outside etc. Fact is when you get a dog it's a commitment just like having a kid is. You have to actually spend time with the dog every day, training it, taking it for walks, and playing with it some.

Had mine for over 17 years, never described it as "work" once.

With all the training we have done and having cats for ever it has been work.

My puppy woke up with diarrhea this morning and has proceeded to shit all over the kitchen and dining room. Thank god it was all tile and hardwoods because it would have been a BITCH to clean up on carpet. Horrible, runny stuff. I can't even describe how bad it smells, either. I don't have a weak stomach at all, but it was almost gagging me to clean it up.

I had a class yesterday and then a ballgame so I was gone for several hours and she stayed with my grandmother. I tell her over and over not to feed her anything but her dog food. I guarantee you she fed her table food, or knowing my grandmother, probably fucking cooked her something and gave it to her. I've been pissed off all morning.

To me a dog is never 100% house trained, they can be 99 percent. Especially when they get older control gets harder or if they start pissing in the house. It can be a medical problem like my cj had an infection. Dogs arent like cats, dogs are alot like kids that never grow up. They bring tons love and happiness to my life.It makes having to clean up after them now and then not a big deal to me.

Puhlease. I have ONE dog that I would consider semi-housetrained and even she has decided that in her old age it's really not worth her while to stumble into the yard to pee and poop any more. MOST of the time they will go when *I* remember to let them out, but with my incontinent male (whom I'm finally hit upon the "right" size diaper, I think) the rest of them became immediately untrained once they saw him do it and not get into trouble.

I thought ours was fine, he's almost a year old but inevitably about once every 2 months he pisses somewhere. Sadly it's usually our fault for not paying attention or erm... well last time it was because he got contact high and pissed in the bed.

Needless to say, no longer do I "smoke" anywhere in the vicinity of the dog.

I was so lucky that my SPCA dog never once had an accident inside. Sure, she chewed some toys to bits that she barfed up on her carpet, but she never peed or pooped inside in the three years I had her.

The puppy my ex had, though, was never properly house trained. It would stare you in the face while it was peeing on the carpet. Argh. I consider that 99% the owner's fault though, not the dog's. It does take a lot of training, but the end result is worth it. I guess I'd say you should be able to trust the dog within the first 8 months to be able to hold it all day while you're out and ask to be let out when you get home. That's providing you don't feed it or overwater it right before you leave for an extended time.

mine is almost a year and she still slips up every once and awhile .. it happens. most mistakes will take place when your out or when she wakes up in the morning. to help with that she sleeps in her crate overnight and in the am she goes right out to do her biz. the crate is your greatest friend and the dog doesn't mind it. she puts herself in it every night at about 10.

Dogs are never really fully house broken. My two dogs are "potty trained" but every now and then they slip up. Sometimes due to me not taking them out on a regular basis one day or sometimes they just act up if they aren't getting attention if I'm busy doing something else. If this was the first time in 6 weeks then that isn't too bad. Try to keep them on a schedule depending on the size of your dogs always try to take them outside 20-30mins after they eat. And if your dog has the habit of waiting by the door when he/she needs to go then take it outside! My dogs tend to bark at me if I'm in the other room and they need to go outside. Sometimes I slip up and tell them hush and I'm left with a surprise turds or piss stain on the floor.

Dogs need direction and crave the pack mentality and need to be told what to do. The training part is essential to reward them when they do good and correct them when they make mistakes. An idle dog is the one that will start to develope bad habits. Work with them and they will work for you.

I would say she is housebroken. Even housebroken dogs will have the occassionaly accident.. but that is usually because 1. the owner didn't let the out 2. they are mad it you. lol

Puppies don't become adults until age 2, after that they usually mellow out. (I'm saying usually a lot because it really depends on the dog.

Having a dog really is like having a child.. although not quite as much work

Yes, I think that is why the thread title is Dog people.... and not Dog Lovers....

Consistent dependable human behavior is what makes a reliable, stable well-adjusted canine. They like a schedule they can count on, they love unconditionally, they can always learn new tricks, and mine never forget anything. They are dependent on you for everything - so you always have to be there for them.

They require the same attention and care you would give a child for the first two years [well, like people used to care for their children], and as Anna_Miller states, if you do your job those first two years you have a terrific life companion after that...

We used the crate to train our lab. He hasn't had an accident in a very very long time. Now, he is stoo big for the crate we bought and has been for over a year but still no problems.
