So whats the difference between blueray and HD other than the price of the players.

Are we going to see the HD cameras go bye bye, and new blueray ones come out.

Blueray has uncompressed audio and a lot more space available. Dual layer disks can hold 50bg and will soon push 75gb. HD is smaller in storage thus needs compression of audio.

HD cameras that use electronic memory won't go anywhere but the disk based ones will become obsolete and replaced with blueray recordable ones.

thanks for the info.

I asked because I am looking for a new video camera. Main reason will be for videos of my son, But it may get used for other things as well, and want to make sure I don't waste money on something that will be replaced soon.

Don't get a disk based one though. Overly expensive and not as reliable for playing in set-top players. Your best bet is one with non-volatile (electronic) memory. Check out popularmechanics.com for reviews on HD cameras.

Sony has a nice line of consumer HDV cams. I have HDR-HC5, which was just over $1k when it came out. I've seen them for $899 and I'm sure you can get them cheaper if you look. Best Buy carries them and I'm pretty sure they're still over the $1k mark there.

The video quality is pretty impressive for a consumer level camera.
