Looking for one that can write a complicated script in a timely manner at a reasonable price.

Have you found any here that are not only capable but at least understands what a deadline is and can meet it?

I am looking for referrals.

I had a deal like that I needed to sort, mainstream application via the web, was having heaps of problems with the Co in the UK we initially gave the project to, $18,000. Got hacked off so I posted the deal on http://www.odesk.com.

Very impressed. Job posted on the Monday, Tuesday, interviewed 4 people via skype. Project started on the Wednesday and came in at $4,000.

Beauty in that not only was I impressed with the feeded back the fee etc, they are going to get both sites launched by 20th May, the UK Co was looking at getting one up for July with renegociation to launch the secong at some stage.

The guy I selected is never off Skype, but always asking the right questions, and, which has impressed me, asking questions about the future code and development.

i've got 2 guys on staff that can handle this, both are prompt like clockword and very skilled (clockwork, ie. the first programmers i've met in 13 years that are on time)

I think they work for themselves if they are here and can program well. Try www.rentacoder.com has very cheap prices but they are always late. Sounds like it might not work for you.

We have used them before, mixed results. That is why I am seeking referrals.

Yes, there are a lot of amateurs claiming to be programmers who are really just part time "scripters".

There aren't a whole lot of solid programmers in the industry because the industry pays really low typically. Also, the type of programmer the industry needs are self-taught programmers. Most college educated programmers have never learned PHP and have no clue about the jargon we use.

I have my hands full on PiracyPanel and a few other projects, otherwise I would of given you a good deal. I do however know a very good programmer. He does charge a fair bit though, but the code is fantastic. Would you be interested in his contact details still?

Good luck. I got so frustrated with "programmers" a few years ago that I just learned how to do everything myself. It takes projects longer to complete because I have to do everything but at least it is done perfectly to spec every time.

(and if I miss deadlines, I only have myself to blame ;) )

One of my faults is the inability to delegate responsibility to others. Design and coding are two items that I have no skills so I have no choice.

I disagree. Most good programmers were mentored by a good programmer, self-taught to an extent, and educated on theory. Having a good programmer as a mentor is key.
