I might move to Mexico - questions

We've been considering a move for a few months now. Have a number of countries we're considering but I'd like to know more about Mexico before making a final decision.

We'd need an FM3 visa. How easy/hard is that to obtain?

I'm British with a brit passport. Easy for me to enter?

Where are the best areas?

Whats the crime like?

Schools and healthcare?

Taxes?

Any info, much appreciated

I know of two webmasters who decided to move to Mexico. If I can find their info I will send it to you so you can have a chat with one of them.

Don't bother paying taxes there. When Mexicans move all around the world they don't pay taxes in the country they go to - they just send the same amount home. So hey, fuck it right?

Taxes are those things Americans call cabs, right?

You don't necessarily need a FM3 visa. Just ask for a 180 days tourist visa at the airport, which you can have it renewed by leaving the country for 72 hours.

No problems with a Brit passport.

I would say Riviera Maya, maybe I'm biased, but the weather, the beach, the people, the places are great here.

Very little here, much lower level than in the big cities and the northern Mexico.

School and healthcare are good quality, but expect to pay for it.

The only unavoidable tax is the famous "mordida".

Hope it helps

That's very helpful thanks. I'll use a lot of that for jumping-off points for research.

This Travel Alert updates information for U.S. citizens on security situations in Mexico that may affect their activities while in that country. This supersedes the Travel Alert for Mexico dated October 24, 2007, and expires on October 15, 2008.

Violence Along The U.S.-Mexico Border
-------------------------------------

Violent criminal activity fueled by a war between criminal organizations struggling for control of the lucrative narcotics trade continues along the U.S.-Mexico border. Attacks are aimed primarily at members of drug trafficking organizations, Mexican police forces, criminal justice officials, and journalists. However, foreign visitors and residents, including Americans, have been among the victims of homicides and kidnappings in the border region. In its effort to combat violence, the government of Mexico has deployed military troops in various parts of the country. U.S. citizens are urged to cooperate with official checkpoints when traveling on Mexican highways.

I just got back from Ensenada after spending the weekend down there. Admittedly I did sail down, so there was no incident. But there were 17 people killed in Tijuana on Saturday I heard.

We crossed back by bus without any trouble though.
