So I finished college a smidge older than everyone else and just got offered a job

35-40k a year. WTF! I guess its worth mentioning I live in Indiana. From what I see on TV its cheaper to live in Indiana and Ohio than any other state that you can name a city in, lol. But still, how to fuck can someone live on that? I am amazed. It would be slightly more enjoyable than my current day job but pays way less.

i dunno what the income tax rate is on 40K income - 20%? so that leaves 32K to live on - rent for a decent place - 12K a year - leaves 20K - car - food - entertainment

can't support a family on 40K very well but for a single person - not that bad.

Well, I don't know about Indiana... but $1000 a month on your home in Iowa buys you a family home. You can rent apartments for $300-500, nice ones at that.

A salary for a 22-year-old fresh out of college of $40,000 is not bad at all... I don't know why people think awesome jobs just pop up out of nowhere.

I have a friend in San Diego that got his degree in biology. He got a job at a medical company as a research assistant for $35k. This is fresh out of college, in San Diego, with a biology degree. What's wrong with that?

1. I guess Indiana is slightly more expensive than Iowa.

2. You missed the last sentence of my post where I said I currently make way more than that, right?

3. Great advice.

4. That guy is no doubt on zoloft, paxil, and prozac, j/k. If I think 35k would suck cock in Indiana where the median house is 120k what is 35k where the median house is 360k? Sucky! Unlike me he prolly has student loans instead of loot in the bank. I feel bad for him. I gotta give it to him for hanging in there though. Hopefully he is happy despite his economic situation. It sounds like he deserves it. Go buy him a beer.

Your guess on the taxes are about exactly right but the crib costs more. I'm thinking about buying the very unattractive 2009 Prius to compensate. Some current hybrids arent much cheaper than an efficient normal car when you consider how much the batteries cost to replace but the new one is supposed to be better. I think I might regret it. I'm not broke, just cheap. And they are so ugly.

It's a starting salary, unless you majored in something useless, you will probably get 5k raise each year for the next 5 years... bringing you up to 60k+ which isn't great, but enough to lead a normal comfortable life...

Most typical grads from the university i went to were getting offers in the area of 70 - 90k/year. A close friend of mine went to work for Amazon for 105k/year.

What degree did you do?

I would say 120k is about the median price around here as well...

Shit just 40k oh my gawd.
To think I feel for several friends who have families and they do not even make that with dual incomes, they are close but still fall short. I know they have a mortgage etc. Also know their monthly buffer is between 500 and 700. At same time they do not come off as poor and are typically pretty happy.

I do, I have a house out there too. Around 8 PM (your time) there were tornadoes and lightning at least from Rensselaer and north.

I don't think people really pay attention. It's like telling somebody from Canada it's going to snow in the winter.

I try to. I pray for hail every day. I make tons of money on it and no one dies. Valpo is only about 2 hours away. If they got nailed with a 20 mile wide storm of quarter sized hail I would be taking a 5 month vacation in Valpo lol.

Some people raise families making that, take home its about $2400 a month. Alot depends on how much debt they are carrying.

35k - 40k is like what everyone gets paid :P A lot of people fresh out of school don't even get that much..

It's fucking bullshit. Especially since you lose quite a bit of it to the government..

But if you stay with a company and gain experience you get a raise at about age 30 So thats about 5 years experience for most graduates..

this is why working for other people has become a complete waste of time.

I can't live for 35k a year. Companies want to hire me for 35k a year and expect me to suck their dick and be grateful and bust my ass... mean while I can't afford to pay my rent and eat at the same time..

luckily I come from a family that has allowed me connections and means to make money outside of my chosen career...

I dunno how people do it.. busting their ass day in and day out just to barely eat and cover the bills..
