:mad WTF is with DomainNameSystems.com's 5 Day Grace Period!

I am out of town and I come back 7 days after a domain expired while most if not all stand up registrars have a standard policy of 30-60 grace period to renew a name before it enters a drop or resale cycle.... After 5 days they open it up to their other clients to jack your domain name... Absolute bullshit!!! Will never use their shit again!

Not sure I'd put much faith in that FAQ. A lot of what it says is simplistic and doesn't apply to all situations.

Ie. Many domains do NOT enter the deletion cycle, but rather are simply assigned to new registrants...

On a related note, some "drop" services have provisions in their agreements (or an unwritten policy) that allows for the original registrant to recover their expired domain (if never entered the deletion cycle) even after it's sold within a period of time, such as 30 days.

Bottom line is registrars have a lot of leeway, including setting the amount of time a registrant has to renew after expiration. Can be as short as zero, though 10 to 30 days is more typical.

Ultimately, it comes down to what the registrar agreement says, and how badly you want the domain name back - with some creativity, some persistence, and willingness to spend some extra $$$, very often "expired" / "lost" domains can be recovered.

Ron

On another note, DNS has been noted to keep my domains for longer without letting them go, because I forgot it. I was able to pay the normal fee and gain my domain back.

We'll see how it goes... emailed them and hopefully get this resolved thanks for the info Ron. Worst case will have to call one of the domain lawyers.

Once that is resolved, get all your domains as far away from that fucker as possible.

Wow. 5 days is crazy. You should be able to get it back for a fee at least if nothing else. Unfortunately ICANN lets registrars get away with pretty much anything.

that's not the issue is it. yes he should have renewed before or had it on autorenew, but we all make mistakes. he should be given a reasonable grace/redemtion period and he's not.
