Buying a used car in Ontario and using a trip permit

I'm planning on buying a used car and was just curious if somecould fill me in on the details of what i would need to pay to get a trip permit on it. Do i have to pay taxes on a car thats a 91? Does the car have to be safetied to get a trip permit? Is there a cost for transfering ownership? how much does the used car package cost? Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

15 day permit you stick on the windshield. Usually used for driving the car from point A to point B after buying it in a private sale. I'm pretty sure you don't need it to be saftied for that but not 100% sure.

Don't you just insure it and drive it anywhere you want?

Yeah, I think so but just wanted to confirm. I'm basically buying a car for parts but i have to drive it a couple hours when i pick it up. I'm just curious about the costs involved like the taxes, cost of transfering ownership, permit costs, used car package cost.

You pay 8% on whatever the sell price is. If the Blackbook value is higher than what you paid, you pay 8% on the blackbook value.

Since you are are buying it privately, you need to have the used car package. Otherwise, the current owner needs to go with you to the DMV office.

You need a saftey certification to have the vehicle put into your name.
At that point, I believe you can get a trip permit without the emissions test since you are not plating it.
But when you do get the trip permit and start driving it, be prepared to be pulled over... alot. So make sure there's insurance on it, or its a $5,000 fine.

Hmm. I don't want to saftey it though. I'm just going to use the car for parts. In the past i've gotten trip permits without a saftey but that was 10 years ago. I don't even care if its in my name or not, just as long as its all legal.

You don't need it to be safetied, thats the main reason for a trip permit, so you can buy it, get it home, or to the shop to be safetied.

You must have a valid insurance claim on a vehicle to get a trip permit though.

Quote:
To apply for a trip permit, take the following items to any ServiceOntario Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office:

your original fit vehicle permit;
if the permit is not registered in your name, a Bill of Sale from the person named on the permit to you, if available;
if the vehicle is registered as unfit, a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) is also required;
name of your insurance company and policy number. The vehicle to which the trip permit will be attached must be insured at the time when the trip permit is issued.

Applicants must pay outstanding fines and NSFs before receiving a trip permit.
