Any home schoolers around?
Subway, the sandwich restaurant, wants to hear your child's story ? unless he or she is home schooled.
The national chain's "Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest" offers prizes and a chance to be published on the Subway Web site and in Scholastic's "Parent & Child" magazine but specifically excludes home schoolers. Subway's website states: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied (sic) States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted. Subway will probably say they excluded home schools because of the main prize ($5,000 worth of athletic equipment to the winning child's school). But Subway could have given it to a local park, church or school of the winning home schooler's choice. Subway's Web site promotion not only misspells "Untied (sic) States," but offers the grand prize winner a "Scholastic Gift Bastket (sic) for your home."

Their contest. Their rules.
What's your point?

How come?
You know we have a school in the US in Maine where if you, as a parent, sign the form that permits the school nurse to administer care to your child, they can give them birth control? The state of Maine also expressly prohibits them from releasing any medical records to the parents of the students! This applies to students eleven and older. Public schools also offer food vending/soda machines, metal detectors to check your kids for weapons and such. Some parents just dont want to turn their kids over to places like this, even though they can't opt out of paying for it. There is legislation in the works now to require all home schooling parents to have a teaching degree in order to continue to do it. Even though most states already have regulations of quarterly and annual reporting and such.. Subway should have found a way as suggested to donate the prize to some community program for kids if a qualified home schooler won.

In California we have law regarding contests and I don't know the laws, but I would think it would have something about discrimination. I would you like if if they said only employees of mainstream company's could win, no self employed.

Nowhere does it say that you cant discriminate based on being homeschooled or not. And its a contest, not an application for employment. Thier contest, thier rules.

Holy crap, so..
If I give something away for free, I can pick and choose who and why? I think half of this forum is pretending to be ultra-liberal; the other half is still pissed they can't get into any clubs.

Because I have never met a person who home schooled their kid that was half normal. My two year old goes to daycare and he learns tons of stuff from the social interaction with the other little suckers there, things he might not learn if he was home all the time. Life is a social and collaborative thing. If my two year old is inspired by such an environment, how cruel is it to prevent an 8 or 13 year old from this learning experience. Guess what there are vending machines at Harvard too, maybe I should advise the parents of those students to teach their kids rocket science at home instead. |
