ThePlanet EV1Servers

Just found out my servers are mostly down for almost a day now because of a HUGE outage at ThePlanet/EV1Servers. Doesn't look like it will be resolved in the next hour. all domains using ns1/ev1servers.net-ns6.ev1servers.net are affected.

I left ev1 a long time ago. You should definitely consider doing the same. If you decide to stick with them then I would subscribe to a site like http://www.pingdom.com/ to help monitor your uptime. It will tell you as soon as there is a second of downtime on your sites.

Received this...

Quote:
Dear Valued Customers:

This evening at 4:55 in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.

We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.

This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.

We are in the process of communicating with all affected customers. we are planning to post updates every hour via our forum and in our customer portal. Our interactive voice response system is updating customers as well.

There is no impact in any of our other five data centers.

I am sorry that this accident has occurred and apologize for the impact.

Sincerely,

Douglas J. Erwin
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

I've had servers with theplanet for years and have never had a problem. My sites that are there are all up right now. I don't use their DNS though. If you've got dedicated servers, why not just set up your own DNS?

BTW pacificrack.com kicks ass too if you just want to get away from ev1.

We are prioritizing issues as follows:

1) Getting the network up at H1 is first and foremost. We’re pulling components from our five other data centers – including Dallas – which will be an all-night effort.

2) Getting power back to the data center is key, though it is too early to establish success there.

3) Because ServerCommand is in H1, our legacy EV1 customers are blinded about this incident. We are in the process of moving the ServerCommand servers to other Houston data centers so that we’re able to loop them into communications.

4) We absolutely intend to live up to our SLA agreements, and we will proactively credit accounts once we understand full outage times. Right now, getting customers back online is the most critical.

Try since 4:45 CDT yesterday afternoon....

at HI data center an electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding the electrical equipment room, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers...

Because the management servers were located in H1, services provided by ResellOne, Legacy EV1Severs domain management, and retail SSL have also been affected by the outage.

Athough they say they expect power to be restored by mid to late afternoon CDT time there really is no way to tell, thats just a rough estimate

Does anyone know if the hosting company adult friendly hosting was affected? I use the ns1.adultnameserver.com and the ns2.adultnameserver.com and my site has not been online since yesterday at around 5pm! This is totally unbelievable. I have been in communication with my host but they cannot tell me when the problem will be corrected because according to them, they don't even know. They also never mentioned anything about "ThePlanet - ev1.servers". Although, they did say something about how the "cogent" was the reason? (I don't know much about servers.) I would say that 99.8% of the time, my site is online so nothing even close to this has ever happened before. I am assuming that this same situation in this thread applies to the reason why my site is not online either? Anyone have any idea?

I am losing money and traffic!!

adultfriendlyhosting.com is just another theplanet.com reseller. this has nothing to do with cogent (a bandwidth provider)

More than likely judgeing from the timeline you provided it would be to much of a coinsitence for it not to be connected by the incident at H1 Data Center., Especially since your host is a reseller.

According to the info I just got,. They now expect to be able to provide initial power to parts of the H1 data center beginning at 5:00 p.m. CDT, about 4 hours after that they will start to power-on customer servers in phases...

Jesus christ, thats like 24 hour outage, from start to finish. (if not more)

There was an explosion in their datacenter, they are getting everything fixed

Self-Managed Servers. In the case of services and products associated with The Planet’s Self-Managed Servers line of products and services, upon the passage of sixty (60) continuous minutes of a Qualified Downtime Event, the Service Credit shall equal three and one half percent (3.5%) of the monthly fees payable by Customer in respect of such products and services for the month in which such Qualified Downtime Event occurred and thereafter during the pendency of such unavailability, the Service Credit shall increase by an additional three and one half percent (3.5%) for each continuous thirty (30) minutes of Qualified Downtime Event up to a maximum of one hundred percent (100%) of monthly fees payable.

So a free month of hosting for 24h downtime.

X 7,500 + customers, thats a hefty chunk of change, 30 to 50k if not more, depending on what plans and or how many servers each one of em has

Which resellers are going through The Planet? I know HostGator is and I take it EV1 is from what was mentioned above. Although, I thought there was some acquisition of EV1 or something like that.

ev1 and theplanet merged. There are hundreds if not thousands of resellers using theplanet.com. Anyone who has the time, patience and competence can rent a server from them and start selling space.

Man this shit really fucking sucks hard. I sure hope that the issue is resolved soon. I completely understand that accidents happen but I run a paysite with over 1000 members, an affiliate program with hosted galleries, hosted banners etc.....man, this just really fucking sucks. Oh well, nothing I can do about it but wait it out I guess.

Legacy EV1 domain customers can access a backup management panel hosted by Tucows at https://manage.opensrs.net. There are some limitations to these backup systems, changes may be restricted if the domain is locked, and use may be intermittent until the servers hosting the main domain management systems in H1 are back online.

Or so they say.

As previously committed, I would like to provide an update on where we stand following yesterday's explosion in our H1 data center. First, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for your patience during the past 28 hours. We are acutely aware that uptime is critical to your business, and you have my personal commitment that The Planet team will continue to work around the clock to restore your service.

As you have read, we have begun receiving some of the equipment required to start repairs. While no customer servers have been damaged or lost, we have new information that damage to our H1 data center is worse than initially expected. Three walls of the electrical equipment room on the first floor blew several feet from their original position, and the underground cabling that powers the first floor of H1 was destroyed.

There is some good news, however. We have found a way to get power to Phase 2 (upstairs, second floor) of the data center and to restore network connectivity. We will be powering up the air conditioning system and other necessary equipment within the next few hours. Once these systems are tested, we will begin bringing the 6,000 servers online. It will take four to five hours to get them all running.

We have brought in additional support from Dallas to have more hands and eyes on site to help with any servers that may experience problems. The call center has also brought in double staff to handle the increase in tickets we're expecting. Hopefully by sunrise tomorrow Phase 2 will be well on its way to full production.

Let me next address Phase 1 (first floor) of the data center and the affected 3,000 servers. The news is not as good, and we were not as lucky. The damage there was far more extensive, and we have a bigger challenge that will require a two-step process. For the first step, we have designed a temporary method that we believe will bring power back to those servers sometime tomorrow evening, but the solution will be temporary. We will use a generator to supply power through next weekend when the necessary gear will be delivered to permanently restore normal utility power and our battery backup system. During the upcoming week, we will be working with those customers to resolve issues.

We know this may not be a satisfactory solution for you and your business but at this time, it is the best we can do.

We understand that you will be due service credits based on our Service Level Agreement. We will proactively begin providing those following the restoration of service, which is our number priority, so please bear with us until this has been completed.

I recognize that this is not all good news. I can only assure you we will continue to utilize every means possible to fully restore service.

I plan to have an audio update tomorrow evening.

Until then,

Douglas J. Erwin
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Amazing. A multi gazzilion dollar business, and they could not anticipate this problem or plan for it? What a major bunch of dumb fucks. I hope that whoever is responsible for this suffers. Anyways, I am taking my business elsewhere.

Its definitely unfortunate when incidents like this occur. If you are running a fairly large network of sites, I would suggest positioning your sites in several different data centers with different hosting providers so there is no single point of failure, keeping your downtime to a minimum.

If you want to do even more and spend a little more cash, look into geographic load balancing. Hope no one was drastically effected by this situation. We currently use dedicatedroom.com for dedicated servers, for our west coast clients.

That falls in the line of disaster recovery. Companies like EV1/The Planet are making millions and have pre-planned almost anything you can think of including terrorist attacks. These guys are moving extremely fast to fix the issues, but then again there is only so much you can do when an electrical fire occurs.

Well i agree, shit happens but they should have had an emergency plan which would have been routed to another of their 'plants' in case of a problem like this, you know kind of having a back of your domains in case your server crashes. They should have been able to route all DNS services to one of their other offices within a couple of hours not almost 2 days.

If you've got a dedicated server, you should probably run your own DNS. I always do since it's one less thing that can go wrong. For your customers to access your sites, the host's DNS needs to be up and your server needs to be up. It's better to just rely on a single server for everything IMO.
