it depends, remember when we had all those posts that it would go up $.25 within a couple days? then prices DROPPED! I filled up at $3.99 last night and drive a civic hybrid so even doing 80MPH I get a good 40MPG and just don't really give a shit. When I drive 55 I get 50-60MPG depending on the road (hilly roads suck)

I think higher gas prices are actually pretty good for us in the big picture. Its starting to making people think before they drive all over in a Yukon XL (or if they do drive it they PAY and feel bad about it)

Now when most of the country is driving reasonably sized vehicles THEN and only then can we really bitch about $4-5 gas.

Compared to the rest of the world we got it easy even at $5. Wonder why europe is FULL of tiny cars? We don't need the massive vehicles and we don't need all the Horsepower.

Do what I do and have a nice shiny V8 (68 mustang) for the weekends and drive to/from work in a 40+MPG vehicle. If you're already doing that THEN come bitch about gas prices!

Drive a truck FOR work? well if you don't own the company you got a free vehicle so STFU own the company? yeah it sucks but pass the cost on to the consumer like everybody else does... Construction working but not a company truck? then they can bitch at you for driving a CAR to work now can they? If its not a company truck don't haul shit for the company /story

Decent argument, but in Europe you can take a train everywhere for good prices. The government needs to build the infrastructure to support the changing climate in the transportation industry. But they won't because GM and Ford are more important to them right now than the people who voted them in.

I am thinking we are going to see another attempt at $150 per barrel (which could equate to $5 per gallon in some areas) followed by a sharp drop back down to the low 120s.

Now if we have a rough hurricane season my hypothesis can be tossed out the window.

With speculation like this, yes it will. If people would chill the fuck out, it would drop a little or stabilize.

So many factors involved.

Boost the value of the dollar, boost the stock market, drop subsidies in developing countries (already happening), and cut out speculation.

OPEC actually just stated that the prices are too high for it to be a sole issue of supply and demand... sounds like somebody applied some pressure.

I don't think it's that simple. It costs $25 million per mile of highway. Rail is even more expensive. A huge overhaul like that would be an insane amount of money, the government cannot do it alone.

A bill is in place right now worth $40 billion for the DC/New England area to get a faster, better rail system in place. That's a start... the next important area, I would think, would be the West Coast.

How about we just bitch slap GM/Ford/Chrysler around and have them figure out what the rest of the world already knows...

The big 3 american car companies are continually REFUSING to get decent fuel economy. Chrysler is absolutely clueless (look at 25MPG from their SMALLEST DAMN CAR! at least for the as shown version LOL)

lets bring back the original beetle... 50HP engine. My mom has one and I've borrowed it a few times and during 1wk stretches driving normal I easily pulled 40MPG in it and it was made in 1974 dammit! toss a modern more efficient engine into it and you'd be pulling 70MPG without a fuckin hybrid.

GM has done an incredible job with the corvette pulling great gas mileage AND having power. Part of this is simply having the extra gear.

Also americans need to learn how to drive a stick! automatics are a WASTE every woman I've ever been with hasn't been able to drive a stick(car) and I've taught every last one of them in under an hour (at least the ones I was with for 1wk+

I simply don't understand why the american cars get such unbelievably bad gas mileage.

Also trucks town better with gears built for slower acceleration yet all trucks come setup more for the drag strip than for real usage which by simply slowing the acceleration of them down can improve FE a solid 5MPG as long as the people don't treat them like sports cars.

I forgot to add that GM is clueless about hybrids and have proven they are AGAINST the electric car. See the price and improvements of vehicles like the Yukon hybrid and thats all you need to know.

There was an article in our local newspaper yesterday about a $4 plateau and then this morning gas went dropped to just under $4 like you said. Not a few days ago, we were about $4.30 per gallon.

Still sucks, but just a tad bit less.

put on your tinfoil hat because there is without a doubt some kind of comspiracy with oil and our gas prices...

Like it or not it has something to do with an oil man being president in some form. Likely not directly because of him but he hasn't done anything to slow the oil companies (his buddies) down.

Fact is if we have a REAL GOVERNMENT not bought and paid for by big corporations somebody would have stepped in and done something by now. Insane profits by the oil companies while everybody in the country is suffering is simply wrong.

Want to fund mass transit systems? tax the oil companies more and we can do it easily but of course schools would get the money before extra rails or subsidized flights or any other transit plans.

Probably.

Then it will slowly go down until it gets to $3.99 and everyone will be happy that it is down to a reasonable level.

Have you seen the movie "The End of Suburbia"? Has some really good insights. Crude oil has peak in terms of being able to harvest it (increasingly difficult) and as a result more expensive. That and the USD losing value too doesn't help.

I can't see that.

The US would be flooding the market with strategic reserves crashing the markets before that happens.

Either that or extreme nationalisation in the name of national security.

The rail system here is almost non existent . A single line that runs from San Diego terminating in LA where you have to change trains to go farther North.

Return trip to LA is over $60.00 Coach and if there is a special event like the US open that we have on now, Its standing room only.. No wonder so many people drive on the 5.

Oh and the trains run every couple of hours sometimes less.

They should study the UK rail system. Trains run every 3 minutes and the cost is very reasonable

$4.99 a gallon at the Chevron on 6470 Hollister At Los Carneros Way Goleta, CA 93110

And you'll find more stations in California, at that price.

So $5.00 gas, it's hear no need to wait. Just move to Cali, and find out.

LOL.

The US can't do shit about energy prices. They got us by the balls.

We have 2% of the reserves but use 25% of the worlds oil.

And as for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, it only holds 727 million barrels of oil and we import a net of 12 million barrels of oil a day or a 58 day supply.

So we are not in a position to flood anything.

Flooding the market with Strategic Petroleum Reserve is not meant to supply the world with oil.. Its meant to cause a disruption in the markets popping the speculation bubble.

Hell they don't even have to flood the market they can simply ban oil speculation or make it more expensive to do so.

I'm sorry but $10 per gallon gas before the end of the year.. there will be missles flying if that happens. I honestly can't see it.

You all complain

Try $10 a gallon here in Europe.
It costs me 100-200$ to fill-up cars in Europe.
