Is it True or False?

I have been told from a few people that if you run the air in your car it doesn't use more gas than keeping your windows down. Is that true? All I know is when I drive with the air on I can see the little thing on the gas thing going down. (sorry I'm a blonde gal so I don't even know what that thing is called, all I know is I like to keep my car full so I like my gas on the big F )

I have a black car with black leather seats and I have burned my ass a few times that hurt.

I really doubt that the small change in windflow would burn more fuel than running the airconditioner would.... but I also doubt that the airconditioner is going to mean much more difference than a few dimes in the scope of a tank full of gas.

I really think that it does burn more gas, however alot of things affect it as well. but living in Florida, doesn't exactly make me want to test it out...i love my AC and i pay a crap load for gas as it is.

Driving with the windows down or using the AC uses approximately the same amount of additional gas according to the pros.

Didnt Mysthbusters bust that and may other gas-saving myths? I voted False: that it does not burn more gas than windows down.

Turning on the A/C during stop and go traffic reduces your gas efficiency by 5-15%, I heard it on the radio today hehe.

It doesnt hurt your car as much when your driving on the highway though.

Depends how fast you are going and the shape of your car. I think the generic answer was the drag on your car starts to burn more fuel than the AC at around 45 mph. if you are on the interstate using AC is definitely better.

It burns no more (minimal difference like 1/2 mile per gallon) gas with the air on (in models after 1985) that's a fact.

The only difference you will notice when not using the air....is having people getting with with horrible body odor after a 20-30 minute drive in the summer.

I for one will pay you $10 for gas anytime i get in your car for the lovely air conditioning privilege.

I had read the ac on doesnt use more gas now because the sytems are much more efficient than years ago when they did cause more gas to be used.

yup 1985 & after.......

they also say having the AC on decreases your chance of being in a life threatening car accident because it helps to keep you more alert than usual

plus you can't put a price on comfort

anyone driving around in the summer with their AC off is a lunatic...or just likes smelling bad

no offense sis i love ya!

Also, keeping your tank full WILL have an effect. Depending on how large your fuel tank is, a half tank vs a full tank can be the same as having 2 adults in your back seat... which does have an impact on MPG.

The best tip I have for getting decent mileage is get your tire pressure checked.

I definitely notice a decrease in acceleration and an increase in gas consumption when my A/C is on.

I definitely DO NOT notice the same thing when the windows are down.

*shrug*

AC units tend to have more of an effect on car performance. They can suck from 5hp to 40hp or more when running. id imagine a small increase in gas consumption per mile, especially in standing traffic. But the main loss will be power when you put your foot down while its on.
