I've got BATS in my attic!!

For the last few weeks, we have heard big thumping sounds in the ceiling. It sounded like dogs were running through the rafters. We called the animal guy to come out since there's no access to the space between the ceiling and the roof. He found that the air conditioning repair guys had left a vent cover off a couple months ago and apparently, we've got a family of bats living in the attic.

These are some BIG bats.

Their answer to this problem is to drop a poison bomb on the other side of the house, where we have to evacuate for 5 hours, minimum. He'll be back Sunday to do this side of the house. We'll have to take my snake and our roommate's dog with us for the day and come back that night hoping that Panamanian time estimates don't result in our untimely deaths.

I asked him about what happens when these critters die up there. He says that they'll dry up as a result of something in the poison gas and he swears they won't stink. I'm not so sure, but I told him if they did smell, even a little...his skinny ass was squeezing in there to clean up the carcasses.

Aah...the joys of living in Central America.

You have to get rid of them... guano (bat poop) is worse than mold. You'll get very sick, go blind... any number of things from it.

Bats can be very dangerous. I have heard of deadly results just from their residuals being in the air.

I am not sure what I would do if I had to deal with the issue living in Panama.

Btw bats are everywhere I believe... I too got one, dead in the attic, it is thin as a piece of paper by now, it's hot up there. It has fallen into a huge glass mug and I am not willing to trash it or touch it.. but it is not smelling.

Histoplasmosis

A certain percentage of bat populations are infected with a virus called capsulatum histoplasme and can consequently excrete the organism in their droppings. As a result of this, accumulations of bat guano, especially in interior spaces, may pose significant health risks to individuals exposed to airborne particles. Anyone exposed to material contaminated with H. capsulatum (such bat droppings or material contaminated by bat droppings) which becomes airborne can develop histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by inhaling the spores of the Histoplasma capsulatum fungus. The symptoms of histoplasmosis vary in severity from flu-like symptoms, to chronic lung disease, to blindness and even death in rare cases ("Histoplasmosis, Protecting Workers at Risk", DHHS (NIOSH) Publication No. 97-146, September 1997). Infants, young children, and older persons, in particular those with chronic lung disease, are at increased risk for developing symptomatic Histoplasmosis.

As a result of such concerns, the American "National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health" (NIOSH) recommends that: "when a colony of bats or a flock of birds is discovered roosting in a building, immediate action should be taken to exclude the intruders by sealing all entry points" in order to prevent the on-going accumulations of guano. In addition it is recommended that the existing accumulations should be removed, especially in areas where there may be exposure to humans. The removal of all material that might be contaminated by H. capsulatum from a building and immediate waste disposal will eliminate any further risk that someone might be exposed to aerosolised spores.

Based on these considerations, it is recommended that accumulations of bat guano in buildings be removed following full health and safety procedures described in our Services page.

Nothing against them but if they are living in your house they are next to impossible to get rid of and their poop is toxic. Bat poop smell is way worse than cat urine and that pesky disease called rabies BESIDES THEY SCARE ME (that's really most important. LOL)

Jeepers! That's nuts! I've used that "dry up" stuff on a rat in my crawlspace before (skip the jokes, please) and it DID stink. SO BAD. I had to crawl in there with a flashlight and scoop it up with a shovel and it was full of maggots omg it was a nightmare.

I actually have bat houses in our tree lines on our property. They keep the bugs way the hell down around here.

Would not want them in the house or attic though. If it did happen trapping is super damn simple and people do it all of the time. The damn things will leave your house every single night anyways.

However I would also be concerned with not only the bat shit left behind but also whatever the fuck they are planning on using to kill them with. It is not like your in some super regulated country were chemical safety is a high priority.

As mentioned, definitely check into the droppings. A friend of a friend of a friend died from poop poisoning, more or less.

Actually here in mexico they sell a rat poison that does the same thing. and amazingly they dont stink.

"Q-8. I WANT TO GET RID OF THE BATS IN THE ATTIC MYSELF. IS THAT OK?(Back to FAQ list )

A. Killing bats on purpose is a very bad idea. Bats are a very valuable part of the ecosystem, and you would be doing yourself and your neighbors a disservice if you were to kill these insect-eaters. If you were to kill the bats, you?d be left with hundreds of rotting bat carcasses and the smell and biohazard that comes along with them."

I think you just got taco'd
