Does a person's ringtone influence your opinion of them?

For example, if you were on a date and their phone went off and it was a certain song or sound as their ringtone could it be a deal breaker?

On the hand, if you are with somebody, not necessarily a date, and their phone goes and the song they have is far cooler than you would have associated with that person previously does that give you pause to consider your opinion of them?

Yes because as a semi-geek, if I hear anything geek related, I instantly think they are a dweeb.

It makes people look around and stay quiet ...

No, just of the phone.

You hear a ring tone that is annoying, and you think, or say, " I hate that Phone " not normally the person.

I hate custom ringtones. Especially the stupid ones that are somehow funny for the general audience, such as farts and animal noises.

I haven't upgraded my phone in 8 years and I never changed the ringtone from the factory basic. What makes it cool is I'm the only person that DOESN'T have a custom ringtone making me ELITE.

My default is "Five On It" by Luniz.

Which really doesn't fit me, which makes it all that more special.

Really though, it's a fucking ring tone, if it bothers you that much you make decisions due to it, it's not their issue, it's yours.

it does represent a person, especially when it is custom... when you are in public and it goes off, everyone looks at you and for the brief moment it is your 'theme song'

I've spent an afternoon working on uploading and editing a ringtone before, nothing better than doing it yourself from a hard to find song no one else has

All I know is that my little sister has both the most annoying ring tone & the most annoying ring for a song when I call her.
It is a loud crappy country song & it makes me want to kick something every time I have to call her.
I send her a lot of texts these days rather than calling.

Ringtone... no. I might roll my eyes if it's really goofy, but dealbreaker? No. What IS a dealbreaker is the fact that she didn't have the courtesy to shut off her phone while on a date with someone. I mean, there was a time in history when people didn't have a phone in their pocket, ringing every five minutes. And things in their life could wait a few hours while they give someone their full attention.

Too much to ask nowadays with a lot of self-important people addicted to their phones.

Well the cellphone mania around here got really off the hook..

You have almost two cell phones per person now and EVERYONE needs to be heard, everywhere and anytime.

I don't go through that myself, but my mate who's working in GE Capital bank in a modern age openspace that's full of the "very unique" ringtones that are ringing about every three minutes is close to a irreversible psychical damage already.

Make it not annoying, no one is interested, no ring tones at all if possible, turn the ringing off in any public place with people you don't know personally, that would be the ideal state for me.

Every time i hear a ringtone in public i find myself checking out the person to see if it suits them.. and yaa I guess make a quick evaluation of them based on their ringtone .. I personally have the first 30 sec of "Here with out you" from 3 doors down.. starts quietly and picks up just a bit incase i don't hear it ..

I don't know that I cast an instant judgement on them for their ringtones..... I guess with me living in a house full of musicians and have learned very much NOT to judge by music or really any other interests they may or may not have. lol

My ringtone is Pink's You and Your Hand , and I have gotten some pretty funny looks when it goes off and starts "I'm not here for your entertainment, you don't really wanna mess with me tonight....... "

Isn't it funny how the person calling them suddenly seems much more important, than who they are actually out with in person ??

People used to cope fine without a mobile phone, yet now all you hear is "oh i couldn't survive a whole day without mine". Pretty pathetic really.

You go to a club nowadays and all you see is people texting etc. Looks fucking ridiculous...

Mine plays 'banana phone' by Raffi. Never had a custom ringtone before my Sony Ericsson. It came with a data cable and editing software so I did it for a laugh.

It was Quagmire saying "giggity giggity giggity" for a while but I like banana phone better.

Anyone who's old enough for me to date shouldn't have a specialized ringtone, IMO.

So yeah, it would be a deal breaker ;) Unless their little sister or someone put it on there and they haven't had time to remove it or something. A phone should ring, not sing.

As far as having phone on while on a date, sometimes your date might actually have a real job where an emergency comes up (there are even wimmins doctors, ya know) and if a someone has children they'd be a fool not to be able to be reached 24/7.

Then there are those of us who not only forget to turn them off, but then forget to turn them back on......

The fact that their phone goes off on a date is a reason in itself...

Parents and I'm assuming doctors (I've been one but not the other) left the name and phone number of where ever they were going to be ;)

Then there were pagers.

Cell phones just made it easier. Of course, we had a cell phone (paid about $5 a minute) when I was pregnant 25 years ago. And the reception wasn't that great. The best was when I was 9 months pregnant and left a message for my husband to bring home a gallon of milk. The message was so garbled he thought "it was time" and in 15 minutes he and 4 of his employees came bursting through the door ready to rush me to the hospital. And the bastard didn't bring any milk.

Yes, for some reason it does affect my opinion on them, specially the newly acquainted ones but not to those I've been going out for sometime.

Not only the ringtone itself but the volume of the tone. I usually keep my phone in a silent mode and just turn on the vibrator just to keep me alert on calls and messages.

I hate people who turn the tones of their phones on the loudest mode that everyone can hear it! Annoying!

On the hand, if you are with somebody, not necessarily a date, and their phone goes and the song they have is far cooler than you would have associated with that person previously does that give you pause to consider your opinion of them?
You kno what's funny.. I am not the most superficial person ever BUT!

I will judge someone based on their ringtone.

It's not really thinking one ringtone is "cooler" than another but that the person's ringtone is soo fucking obnoxious and embarrassing.. I mean.. what type of person would pick a ringtone like that?

If I am so put off by a persons ringtone that I will not talk to them I will probally be more likely to ask them wtf is up with the ringtone first.

I personally never use a ringtone to me it's trashy, low class and low budget. lets everyone around you kno you just got a phone call.. fucking hate it..

Vibrate only for me.

I did make a Lil wayne - money on my mind ringtone for my iphone if anyone wants it tho rofl

Those of you saying no....if a person shares musical tastes with you or is very far removed from you that doesn't alter their 'coolness' factor with you at all even if not intentional?

And things in their life could wait a few hours while they give someone their full attention.

Too much to ask nowadays with a lot of self-important people addicted to their phones.

amen!! I went out for dinner w/ a guy who wanted my "input" on something he was working on and he ws on the phone the whole time..needless to say I haven't spoken to him since...

There still is. (pagers) Thus no excuses for anyone to be rude on a date. Answering the phone and yapping while making the person you're with sit there is, well,... whenever I used to see it on shows like "blind date" etc, I would cringe and curse the idiot doing it, for being so self-involved.

A single parent should be able to have a date and trust that the person left in charge of their brats is competant enough to handle whatever comes up. (or prevent "whatever" from happening)

Again, people left their kids with others back in the day before the almighty cell. Like you said, they left the # of the restaurant in case of emergency.

The message was so garbled he thought "it was time" and in 15 minutes he and 4 of his employees came bursting through the door ready to rush me to the hospital. And the bastard didn't bring any milk.
I agree having a cell makes a lot of things easier. Getting stuck on the side of a deserted highway will never be the same thanks to it, for example. But being in a business meeting or in a movie theater or on a date isn't among them.

(you of course already know this, I'm speaking to the masses for the most part)
