Is there any good reason to launch a blog on a free host service?

I've been thinking of starting a few new blogs and I've noticed that a lot of people are using free adult blog hosting services. In your opinion, is there any good reason for this other than saving on your hosting bill? I'm not ragging on these services, just genuinely curious.

It is a terribly dumb idea. Nothing is free and risking your work to save $5 is insane.

I've never seen a reason to. Even a high-traffic blog isn't a huge BW hog and why risk that a blog host is going to go under? Plus, why would you give up ad space in the header, footer, and 404 to a host when you can be profiting from it?

This was pretty much my thinking as well, but I couldn't help but notice that some top blog results for some pretty good terms are hosting on free hosts. I kept thinking there must be some benefit to make that kind of risk.

Of course there are benefits, you really think people do it to save $5/month on hosting?

You build your main blogs on your own domains/hosts and you also build yourself an inbound link farm (and additional revenue stream) on a bunch of the free hosted blog sites to support your main blogs.

Just like everything else, you spread them around to minimize risk. You also ensure you have copies of the blog posts and images etc. so that if a host goes down you can very quickly duplicate it on a different host.

You can also get the same type of thing by building your own "private" multi blog domain on different hosting companies if you're that paranoid.

People who are heavily into SEO utilize a LOT of free hosting services (blogs, sites, articles etc.) out there in order to build up their inbound links.

yup, 20 free blog hosts will give you 20 new IPs to link from
you add a blog to thumblogger and Google eats that blog alive as opposed to you adding to a new domain and wait and wait and wait...

adding a handwritten blog to a free host - now that I don't get

Actually, this isn't the same thing as your own multi blog domain wll only be linking to your own network of sites whereas a free host one will appear to have more "natural" linking all over the place.

And as Antonio said, an established free host is going to have the SEs crawling around it a hell of a lot more than something new. So you're also utilizing that by putting links on those blogs to any of your new sites to get them indexed quickly.

You could not buy the link power or link weight that blogspot offers. Never. You could also not buy the spidering and authority of a domain like thumblogger. It has nothing to do with COST, it has everything to do with RETURN.

Dont let any of the old washed up wannabee search engine guys tell you differantly.

3 of the best SEO's I know, 2 of which this forum would recognize, all utilized links off blogspot, blogdrive, thumblogger, and other "authoritive" domains.

There is many people here who remember when I was pulling in 5-6k a week just off my blogspot links. I could not ever have generated that type of traffic on my own "new" domains, but was easy as shit on an authoritive domain.

And thumblogger is as almost just as big a beast as blogspot now, if you run adult websites, and dont have some free thumbloggers pushing link power to you, well then you are foolish.

Why do you see lots of free blog systems blogs in the serps? Because the root domains are monsters, and have authority. Unique content, some fresh solid links, and its all over cept the ranking.

Luck is NOT one of googles variables for determining serps.

Crapx.com

Just take a look at the index, and you understand why people spend some time to place them on one of my free blog hosts.

Actualy i found out sometime is better to use free blog host, especialy in mainstream field. For example there are blog hosts which have very high traffic and when your post appear on front page you instantly get a lot of traffic. Conclusion?Use both, paid and free hosts.
