anyone got a Vista Laptop and installed XP instead?

I am about to purchase a new laptop, and wonder if anyone here has recently bought a new vista laptop and successfully gotten rid of vista and installed XP instead?

Do you have to buy xp separately ie. pay more money, or does microsoft give credit for the op system?

xp is working great for me, and I really don't want to bother with a different os

Vista is so much nicer to work with than XP. Unless you need to run some special software that really doesnt work on Vista i see no reason why to stick to XP. Its faster, more stable, more options, looks nicer etc.

I purchased a new Lenovo laptop and had it built with windows XP.

Just purchase it with XP, there as still many laptops out there that can be purchased this way.

If not then yes you will have to buy the software yourself and install it. There is no credit from Microsoft.

why should I bother with vista when there is absolutely nothing that xp can't do for me

xp is perfect for my needs, going into a different os is completely unnecessary

But you are gonna bother deleting an OS and installing a new one and downgrading your computer because Vista can do all that you need as well plus some more. Yeah that makes sense man.

I agree with you on this one.

I also am keeping XP.

I just heard this morning that Microsoft is going to launch their new OS early 2010. It's supposed to use WAY less memory than Vista or XP. So I'll wait for it before changing my OS.

Well, yes it needs some more memory. I dont know if you know it but memory costs nearly nothing anymore. I take it your new laptop comes with 2 gigs? Vista will run just fine on it.
Im really not sure what your problem is with Vista and why you would go through all that trouble to keep using XP while Vista is better.

vista is NOT better, XP is better in every way (has all the updates, SP3, ALOT less laggy, uses way less memory, does everything vista can do, all drivers up to date, etc) ... vista just looks prettier

When I bought my Sony Vaio it was on Vista. I needed to connect it to Internet through a network hub and here we face my first problem - I tried EVERYTHING but it didn't want to connect me. Then I read about the problem that Vista might have issues with hubs. I decided to downgrade to XP - and here's the point at which I faced my second problem. Aparently it's not that easy to downgrade because Vista uses different SATA drivers and when you try installing XP it simply doesn't see your hard drive. A floppy solves the problem, but I don't have an external floppy for laptops. My friend created an XP installation CD from the official XP CD I had and built in the driver into the installation. The headache of Vista removal really drove me nuts.

So far I'm happy with my XP and it perfectly suites my needs

i had vista on laptop (core 2 duo 1.8ghz, 2gb ram, geforce 8600 512mb), switched to XP and it was flying but the sound drivers didn't work in xp so I was forced to go back to vista

Hardware doesn?t run well on Vista (even new hardware)

The new security of Vista is overkill most of the time, being prompted for every little thing - Vista even labels existing applications as suspicious.

Lack of drivers for older and newer hardware.

Power options don't change automatically for laptops. Whether you are plugged or unplugged from a power source.

The Start Menu has been redone so it is hard to navigate and find what you are looking for.

Rebooting a Vista machine takes longer than XP.

Aero UI is great to look at, but resource hog

The many different versions of Vista will be confusing to basic computer users.

Graphic performance sucks compared to XP.

Basic functions like add/remove programs are hard to find.

VPN doesn?t work correctly.

Software that is supposed to be windows compatible shuts down randomly.

Minor changes to hardware may prevent the system to boot up.

No ?open with? when right clicking on a file.

to list just a few

Ok most of those are just patently false. No "open with" ? I must have a special version of vista then lol.

Like what? I have had no problems whatsoever. All my hardware runs fine. You make it sound like hardware in general doesnt work with Vista. This is simply not true.

This is a matter of turning it off. If you seriously call a really good OS bad because you need to turn something if what you dont like then...well then youre stupid.

Blah blah...get 2 gigs of ram, which everybody should have no matter what OS and you wont have any problem with resouce hogs. Sorry, just not weak point. Youre reaching.

Cant comment on that but based on your other points so far it looks like you never tried to work with Vista longer than 5 mins and you're just making things up to bash it for some reason.

Sorry i dont want to sound rude to you but youre either totally misinformed or i dont know what. Besides 1 or 2 points (for a part) you may be right but the rest looks like some random stuff you found while using Google searching "bash Vista for no reason".

How old were those computers? Vista runs faster than xp for me. And its supposed to do that. I still can only think you either didnt use it properly or on a too old computer.

Brand new computers. I was in the market for a new laptop 3 months ago. I purchased 2 new laptops with Vista Premium and got rid of both. trying to run photoshop on those computers was a nightmare - it seemed that vista was such a resource hog. I had 2 gigs of RAM and running an intel core duo t-8300 2.4Ghz

One was a Sony and the other a Dell - I am very well versed on computers and hardware - I build my own and have built them for about 11 years now. I doubt that i was not using it properly

That being said - this is a total personal preference and again I was just playing devils advocate for the sake of argument

I am DEFINITELY not one to believe the software sucks just from disgruntled windows users hence why i went and tried it out. For me, it did not work well and i went back to XP

Dude why does it work for me and not for you? Vista works perfectly fine with 2 gigs. Even on 1 gig. If im here telling you it works perfect for me then what other than you did something wrong can we conclude? Vista takes some tweaking when you buy it thats for sure. But if you do that then its fast, smooth, stable and not some laggy resource hog.

You think im lying to you? You think i would say Vista works fine while it works horrible?
If it works perfect on my computer with 2 gigs and even on 1 gig computers but not for you then you did something wrong. I see no other option.
