I hope somebody here can give me some advice.

I've been getting numerous e-mails and calls to my home phone from many different companies and institutions claiming that I requested information about their services. I have never given out my home phone number online. Many of these companies call me by a vulgar transmutation of my real name, indicating that somebody I know has been masquerading as me, giving out my personal info.

I am not protected by the "Do Not Call" list, for it appears (to the companies) that I requested information! They actually have a right to call me!

None of these companies are any help whatsoever. The ones who say they got my name from a list won't tell me where the list came from. The ones who say I filled out an online form won't let me reach their webmaster, who might give me the IP address of the original sender.

I've looked online for information about protecting myself from this harassment, but I don't know the terminology for this kind of situation. It's probably a case of identity theft of some sort, but most websites only talk about the most common types of identity theft.

I'm getting too many calls each day to ignore this situation. I need some help, but I don't know how to look for it. Any ideas

Is changing your phone number out of the question? That's what I'd do. Then make sure the new one is unlisted.

To set up a credit fraud alert, simply call Equifax Consumer Fraud Division at 1-888-766-0008. You will be presented with an automated voice response system that will ask you to input your personal information. This process should only take a few minutes.

If you prefer, you may also write to the Equifax Consumer Fraud Division at the following address:

With all the craziness in the internet today, my credit card automatically flags any transaction from an overseas or online source that I didn't pre-approve. Also while the Do Not Call List is helpful, it doesn't protect you from people calling from overseas or for political reasons. It doesn't protect you from political calls because they're the government, and it doesn't help with overseas companies because they don't give a shit about US laws because that can't be prosecuted for them.
