It's over for Hollywood.....

Hollywood just fucked itself..... Now they'll have to share their profits with Netflix AND Microsoft...... All because they were asleep at the wheel.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 to stream Netflix movies

LOS ANGELES - Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console will be able to stream thousands of movies over the Internet, thanks to a deal with Netflix.

The arrangement Microsoft Corp. announced Monday at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Los Angeles will give Netflix's 8 million subscribers another way to stream movies on a TV instead of a computer. A Netflix-backed startup called Roku already sells a small streaming device that connects to TVs.

The Netflix streaming service ? which operates in addition to its DVD-by-mail program ? offers 10,000 movies and TV shows. Microsoft's Xbox had movies available before, but not nearly as many. This expansion is key in helping Microsoft compete with Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, because gaming consoles are becoming entertainment hubs with movies, videos and music.

Too bad every XBox360 seems to die if you regularly use it. I think it'd be a better deal if Sony was involved.

sounds cool. Is there any waiting time when you stream movies? If there are I dont really see any advantage to on demand except there is a larger library.

The online Netflix library is severely limited. The movies are not very good and the TV on DVD selection is extremely lacking as well. It can probably entertain you for a couple months, but that's it. I've pretty much watched anything decent on it, there is nothing left.

You still need to use regular Netflix to get the good stuff.

Agreed. My brother was talking about this a few weeks ago.

Right now of my 197 titles in queue, 16 are available for download.

hehe, you're always so nice!

Semi-on topic.. lately my cable company provides the movies on-demand on the same day the movies become available for sale on DVD. I'd opt for that.

But I guess if you have a gaming system and no two-way addressable cable box (needed for PPV and on-demand), it could be a cool option to have available.

Another issue is picture quality.

I watch on my 24 inch LCD monitor. They are good enough to watch, but usually somewhat blurry. I would not want to watch one on my 60 inch or even my 37 inch... I would prefer to wait a day or two for DVD quality.

Uh, Hollywood owns the copyrights to every single second of what netflix is showing.

They can pull the plug any time they want.

Netflix is just another broadcast partner like ABC, CBS, NBC, HBO, Showtime....no no no no no wait.... Hollywood fucked up by allowing showtime and HBO in the business.

If it wasn't for HBO, Showtime and Netflix etc... Hollywood wouldn't be making jack shit these days.

When's the last time you actually went to a movie theater?

Saying that Hollywood was asleep on this is not really true.

Hollywood makes movies, not streamimg websites with big investments that might
unltimately fail leaving then without capitol to do what there real buisiness is; which is making the movies.

The entertainment industry has changed. At the end of the day the movie companies in Hollywood and the record companies are really nothing more than content companies - very similar to our industry.

In the past Hollywood ( I believe ) shared the profits with movie theatres, but they didn't share the profits with companies who create VHS tapes or DVDs - they had companies purchase them. Now.... With online they not only have to share the profit with Netflix, but also M$.

It sucks because if they had thought this out and embraced the Internet instead of bitching , fighting, and screaming about how they were getting ripped off.... They would be in a different spot right now where they can sell directly to their customers instead of having to share with movies or purchase DVDs from another company.

Actually MS and Netflix will actually be giving money to Hollywood not the other way around, dipshit.

Those 2 compnaies couldn't even rent movies without PERMISSION from Hollywood so how was Hollywood asleep at the wheel?

I love my PS3 but man, Sony needs to do something with their online store. All they ever update it with is crappy BluRay Trailers and add-ons for Rock Band. Where are the downloadable movies? Where are more downloadable games?

Still not gonna buy an XBox though.

Good move for Microsoft! Wow!

I personally LOVE my Xbox 360. It works like a charm. It's very fast and the games are great. I am super-impressed with the business model too. Downloadable games, demos, content. Just great. The only problem ever had with it was a glitch with the soundtrack in certain movies which was fixed with a software update.

PS3's are about to die. I read someone that Sony has lost $3 Billion on those units so far because they sell the units at a loss with hopes of making it up on software sales (like Microsoft did with the first xbox). Somehow something went wrong and they aren't selling as many as they had hoped or something.. oh well. Online GTA-4, anyone?

Hollywood will never die. It's funny, I've been hearing reports for over a decade now that say the movie industry is dying. I think this latest news is just yet more hogwash. It will never be "over for Hollywood" as long as people continue to go to the movies. And that will never change, no matter how good people's home theaters become. People will always want to go out and leave the house for a while.

Good for M$. I was looking into the roku, but it has less than DVD quality (review on ATOS on G4) and doesnt look like it will support it for a bit to come. if either one supported DVD or better quality, I would use it but until then, ill continue to rent movies though blockbuster in the mail.

You read retarded stuff.

US sales units sold

January
Xbox 360 - 230,000
PS3 - 269,000

February
Xbox 360 - 254,600
PS3 - 280,800

March
Xbox 360 - 262,000
PS3 - 257,000

April
Xbox 360 - 188,000
PS3 - 187,100

May
Xbox 360 - 186,600
PS3 - 208,700

Now a far as I can see the PS3 has outsold the 360 in 3 of the 5 months this year and in the 2 months the 360 outsold the PS3 it outsold it only by a total of 5900 units. The PS3 so far in 2008 has outsold the 360 by over 80,000 units so if the PS3 is dying what does that make the 360?

I've had 3 of them, first-gen, second-gen, and one I bought a year ago. All dead. And I followed all the instructions to keep it cool and it was in 2 different setups. Some people get lucky some don't. I have a first-gen PS3 that works like a charm.
