To blog or not to blog...what is the best answer?

I'm thinking of turning one of my long running sites into a blog. I'm not sure if its a good idea though. Is it worth installing wordpress, etc or is it better to just write bits and not have to deal with comments, wp updates, ect?

Never mess with an established site, my opinion, too risky compared to the possible reward. Google doesn't like extreme changes of the site structure, the site would recover, but it could take a few months.

As for the comments and updates: There are plugins that let you auto-update by just pressing a button and I'd disable comments on an adult blog anyway, since ALL comments are spam in adult (ok, maybe 0,1% aren't, if you are lucky).

Great advice StarkReality, and spam comments run 105% on adult blogs

If you have an established site already, why not just install Wordpress in a subdirectory?

The site has been running since 99 but i haven't updated it in years. It still gets some decent traffic but the style is outdated and I really wanted to change up it up and add a lot more content to the index page. I know when i did this to a mainstream site of mine i lost a lot of keyword place i previously had for years, and while I don't want that to happen to this site, I just don't know what to do with it.

If your site isn't doing well with revenue and you have had it since 99 this is Really horrible advice.

My site quickclimax.net used to be a nicely written adult webmaster resource site. I had it up for 8 months and wasn't making shit off the site. I would get around 200 readers a day but still no money.

Well i decided to convert it into a blog that I would love writing about. So as soon as I convert my site into a blog I write 6 posts within a couple hours and I start getting incredible traffic. So my blog is about 3 weeks old and I'm getting almost 2k UV's a day from AW stats, google analytics 1200 UV's . this 3 week old site has brought in around $200.00 in revenue so far.

here is a screenshot of my newly converted blog I made 3 weeks ago - http://www.launchimages.com/out.php/t12713_Untitled.jpg

Couldnt you install WP on a sub domain or a sub directory and feed some traffic from the established site?

Besides fucking with an established site, is there any benefit to installing wordpress vs just using plain old html?

Wordpress is a great very simple tool for managing your content.

Wordpress uses html, css, etc..

The blog format is also soo convenient for the surfer.. The idea behind the blog is that someone is personally updating the site every day, once a week or whatever.. So they come back often to check updates..

It also ends up keeping an archive of old posts the surfer can view also..

all for you.. done.

You can redesign it so it doesn't even look like a blog..

I wouldn't mess with it..... keep the same structure, all the same pages intact, but update those pages with a new design

there is alot to be said for a good static site that has google respect

Great, looks like you are doing better now. When talking about an "established site", I wasn't referring to domain age only, I was referring to search engine rankings and actual traffic...nothing bad in completely trashing a site and building a new one if it doesn't work as expected and makes you zero money.

Now, go invest in your site, if it gets 2k without buying links and additional offpage SEO, it has potential for alot more if you put some money in it. Like every business, zero investment means much smaller returns.
