Anyone Had Success Owning Classifieds Sites?

A mainstream classifieds domain has been offered to me. 50% of my day is devoted to mainstream so I'm comfortable with that aspect. Trouble is I've no experience with classifieds. It's a classifieds niche, if that helps. I would imagine there's quite a bit of demand too for the products in this niche.

Does anyone have any relevant experience? I'm thinking of buying domain, setting up e-classifieds, throwing up adsense, seoing the hell out of it and running it in whatever spare time I can find.

Thoughts?

Isnt that like competing with craigslist?
I know whenever I even think of online classified to post, look for, or otherwise that site is what I hit or think of.

Is craigslist not popular or whatever in your area?
