Best guitar solor of all time?

I'm not talking speed here, I'm talking classic solos that will stand the test of time.

My vote goes to the solo in Hotel California. As classic as the song itself.

Vai was blown away when he heard him play at 19.

Completely subject to taste. I would say the most instantly recognizable solo would have to be "Eruption" by EVH. You know it on the first note.

Eruption was my first thought... all my friends who've played guitar set that solo as their benchmark, their goal to achieve.

I'm not sure it's my favorite anymore because I've heard it sooooo many times now... but I think Sweet Child O'mine guitar solo by slash is a classic signature solo.

Other great suggestions already made: Hotel Calif, November Rain ( personnaly, I like it even more than the one I submitted but not sure the song will survive the test of time like Sweet Child will).

I was trying to think of one for Hendrix and thanks for picking this one in front of me.

No I would see that or any Hendrix solo.

But a mention for Clapton on "I'm so Glad" the live version. You have to hear it to appreciate the variations of the mans guitar work.

Honestly, I dont think youve looked enough then.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=g1mz_...eature=related

He does more than anything Hendrix or Clapton could dream of, and just when you think he is fast, he saves the speed for last.

He has dexterity that no "classic" guitarist could ever dream of.

Look at that video above and tell me you are not in total AWE.

It's really a "solo", but I would mention the short guitar solo/bridge that Jimmy Page does in "Whole Lotta Love".

I'm not sure it's possible (for me) to pick the best.
There are so many great ones.

Hendrix wasn't the best musician but his Woodstock solo will stand the test of time.

Jason Becker may get his place in music history. Maybe. In 100 years nobody may know his name. But without question they will still be humming a classic like Hotel California.

As a solo artist and his ability to play, sure, he is amazing. But outside of the musicians world he is hardly known at all.

I'm talking the greatest guitar solos. Not the greatest player.

Yup, that would be a good one!

That's what I'm talking about. That kind of solo where on the first or second note, you know who it is and what song it is. Hendrix's version of that is without question on the list of the greatest.

So we've got (in no order of importance):

Hotel California
The Star Spangled Banner (By Hendrix)
Sweet Child O' Mine
Eruption
Stairway To Heaven

What else?

Think of it like this...

Think of guitar solos that you can hum, note per note and can tell what song it is if I just played ONE or TWO notes from the solo. Solos that will be known and liked by your children and stand the test of musical time.

If there is a solo such as this from one of Jason Beckers songs, so be it. I own Cacophony's "Go Off" and couldn't hum a single riff or solo from it right now if you put a gun to my head.

Give me 30 seconds from Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Blues Saraceno, Paul Gilbert or any of the other masses of bad ass guitarists from that area and I couldn't tell one from the other. I doubt most people could unless they were themselves guitarists and were into those guys. Yet play the first second of Eruption and just about everyone on this board could tell you what it was.

Way back in the days of Randy Rhoads, Ozzy played a concert for (or sponsored by) some British radio program called something like The King Biscuit Flower Hour or some crazy shit like that. The solo by RR, captured in that concert, on "Over the Mountain," in my opinion, is the most unbelievable solo in the history of the guitar (yes, I heard it back in the day -- I am THAT old).

can never really say what is "best" of all time as everyone has different tastes.

Some good one's have been mentioned here already but I would put these on the list:

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover (Amazing from start to finish!)
Any solo by Randy Rhoads
David Gilmore/Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Please dont try and convince these guys Randy Rhoads was even good LOL I am sure he wll be lumped into the "he plays too fast" crowd

If its not on some 70s radio station that plays Zeppelin all damn day, they cant "hum" along to it... people like Randy blow away all this stuff, classic rock solos cant even compare

just because its too fast for them, they dont feel it has "emotion" etc...

as been said, guitarists may know it, but if the general population cant "air guitar" alongside it, its not "solo" enough or somethin

Yes hes fast but his music sounds like nothing but fast scales, when others Like Stevie ray Vaughn, Clapton are also fast but more than fast there rifs have soul and rythem
