Are Flash Banners Worth The Bandwidth?

Im talking Mainstream sites here......

For example, you got a Poker site with a quarter page flash movie advertising the product. Is the bandwidth cost worth the benefit of the amount of members you gain? Or do you think you could produce a decent .gif which could perform the same number/quality of joins for the lower bandwidth cost. Assume high traffic volume.

I think if you are that worried about the bandwidth, in this case, with advertisements like that, then you might wanna get out of the game now.

No offense.

Well there are quite a few variables there.. how big is the ad? One flash movie can be fifty times as big as another. Some flash movies are far smaller than gifs. Are they doing things in flash you can do in a gif that will make people more likely to click? How much are they paying for bandwidth? How much do they make per sale? Are they just trying to grab long term marketshare from rivals by forgoing profit? etc etc. The very fact that they are running would tend to answer your question though.

None taken...... with all due respect, thats a pretty fucking dumb comment which doesnt answer the question. If an animated .gif produces the same results then it might be one way to minimise costs during early stage growth and could therefore be a tool for developing a business model.

For example, Bodog launched his site with $10k and now has a multi billion dollar enterprise. In the early days he achieved this low cost of entry by doing most of the work himself and by minimising expenditure on the design & bandwidth side.

You ask a question that can not be answered. Too many variables, you just would have to figure out your ROI by testing it, if it's costing more than it's making then obviously the answer is no it's not worth the bandwidth.

Sorry mate. Was not trying to bust your balls in this case.

Ok...... im very poorly right now (ill health) so fuse is probably shorter than it should be.

Worth noting that because most gaming sites dont accept US users (for legal reasons) they are often required to use non-US servers, which charge a lot more for bandwidth.

flash banners are doing great on pulling attention. Especially "peel ads" that we do.
